The World Cup winning France international's departure has freed up a considerable amount of space on the Major League Soccer side's wage bill, leaving room for another big name to join the American club.
According to The Sun, 34-year-old Matuidi has been released from his contract, despite Inter Miami maintaining that talks are still going on with his agent.
Mexican international Rodolfo Pizarro was also sent back to Liga MX club Monterrey on loan, freeing up more space for another big earning star to take up one of their three Designated Player spots.
The Designated Player (DP) rule, otherwise known as the Beckham rule, was implemented to attract superstars to MLS by offering lucrative salaries outside of teams' modest budgets - although limiting their number, with three DPs permitted per club.
Given Inter Miami's poor finish last season under former Manchester United and Everton defender Phil Neville, and the club being hamstrung by $2,271,250 salary cap sanctions spread over 2022 and 2023, the Herons will want to take advantage of their unaffected DP spots.
Atletico Madrid's Luis Suarez is due to be a free agent come the summer and seeks a move to the MLS, meaning the now 34-year-old former Liverpool star will be the perfect target for Beckham's Inter Miami.
The Manchester United and England legend is also said to be setting his sights on bringing footballing giants Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to his club as they head towards retirement.
However, given Beckham's project is still under construction and any challenge for honours in America's top flight out of reach, Inter Miami will have to wait some time before they attract that calibre of player.
