Müller began on the bench under Julian Nagelsmann for just the second time ever in the Bundesliga last Friday as Bayern began 2023 with a 1-1 draw at RB Leipzig. With the matches coming thick and fast - the defending champions also face Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday - the chances are good that the 33-year-old attacker will be back in the side here as they bid to extend their five-point lead at the top of the table. New signing Yann Sommer impressed on his debut so will be in goal once more, but fellow winter arrival Daley Blind is likely to have to wait a while longer for his first competitive outing in Bayern colours. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting took his goals tally to seven this season against Leipzig, to go with the 10 in nine competitive games before the winter break, so that leaves Nagelsmann spoiled for choice in attack, with Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman all fit and vying to start.
It is not often that Bayern are upstaged on any given matchday, but Cologne did just that on Saturday with a thumping 7-1 success over Werder Bremen, lifting them five points clear of the relegation zone. It was a timely boost for the Billy Goats, who lost three on the spin before the winter break, with their previous league win as far back as Matchday 10 in mid-October. Steffen Tigges struck twice against Bremen, including a spectacular goal from the halfway line, so he will surely have done enough to keep his place in the side ahead of newcomer Davie Selke. Coach Steffen Baumgart would like to partner the two together, but a lengthy injury list to contend with is limiting his options. Ellyes Skhiri went off with an ankle problem against Bremen and may not make it in time for Tuesday, leaving a big hole in the centre of the field that will need filling before throwing in more attackers away at Bayern.
Match stats
Musiala has only failed to contribute a goal (score, assist or both) in four of his 15 Bundesliga appearances so far in 2022/23.
Whilst at Gladbach, Sommer kept five clean sheets in 15 appearances against Cologne (W8, D1, L6).
Bayern have hit the 50-goal mark by this juncture in a season for the second time. They did so one game sooner - after 15 matches - back in 1976/77.
Florian Kainz is Cologne's biggest goal threat this term, but has just the one assist to show for his first seven games against Bayern (all defeats).
Baumgart has lost all five of his previous meetings with Bayern as a coach, and is winless in four against Nagelsmann (D1, L3).
Cologne last beat Bayern on 5 February 2011 (coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2), and haven't won in Munich since 21 February 2009 (2-1).
