Augsburg went down swinging when they lost 5-2 to local rivals Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup on Wednesday. It marked a second straight defeat for Enrico Maaßen's team after their 3-2 defeat at Cologne on Matchday 10. Having already beaten defending champions Bayern at home in the league this season, however, Augsburg will be quietly confident of grabbing the headlines again by taking out Leipzig. Mergim Berisha got the winner in the Matchday 7 victory over Bayern but he is doubtful for this game after missing the cup match with an ankle problem. Polish full-back Robert Gumny was forced off after 45 minutes in midweek, so he will have to prove his fitness to get another start.
Leipzig start the weekend in tenth and only two points ahead of Augsburg, but they are six matches unbeaten in all competitions following a 4-0 home win over Bundesliga 2 high-flyers Hamburg in the DFB Cup on Tuesday. Marco Rose's team coped comfortably in midweek without seven-goal leading goalscorer Christopher Nkunku and fellow attacker Timo Werner. Nkunku is hopeful of facing Augsburg despite having a minor wrist operation, while it's unclear if Werner will have recovered from his ailment in time. After scoring twice against Hamburg, Yussuf Poulsen will be keen to compensate for any absentees. Janis Blaswich will continue in goal in the absence of long-term injury victim Peter Gulacsi, with Leipzig looking to build on last weekend's 3-2 win over Hertha Berlin.
Match stats
Berisha has scored or assisted in three of his five Bundesliga appearances. He produced 24 goals and 15 assists in 58 games for Leipzig's sister club in Salzburg.
Augsburg and Leipzig have each taken 10 points across the previous five matchdays. Only leaders Union Berlin have fared better.
However, Augsburg have only collected four of their 13 points on home soil, including three against Bayern.
Only Werder Bremen's Niclas Füllkrug (eight) has outscored Nkunku this season. The Frenchman has three goals in six meetings with Augsburg to date.
Defender Willi Orban has three Bundesliga goals this season. That's as many as strikers Werner (three), Poulsen and Andre Silva (both goalless) combined.
Leipzig have conceded five of their 15 goals from set-pieces, including both Hertha efforts last time out.
