Augsburg took on the other Borussia on Sunday, coming up agonisingly short in Dortmund in a 4-3 loss that saw them equalise three times in a Bundesliga game for the first time ever. Regardless of performance, the bottom line is they are eight without victory in the league since a three-game winning run in Autumn that included the big scalp of Bayern Munich. Coach Enrico Maaßen handed debuts to five January signings at the weekend, with defender David Colina scoring with his first touch. Summer arrival Mergim Berisha missed the game through suspension but is expected to return and partner top scorer Ermedin Demirovic and potentially also Dion Beljo. Ruben Vargas and new man Irvin Cardona are both out after going off early in Dortmund with ankle and foot problems respectively.

It's a knee problem that has plagued Gladbach's Thuram ahead of the season's resumption. The 2022 World Cup runner-up did train ahead of Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen but wasn't ready to feature. Coach Daniel Farke said after the game the striker was "50/50" but "cautiously optimistic" ahead of this trip to the WWK-Arena. One player who will definitely be watching on is captain Lars Stindl. He came off the bench to score Borussia's two consolation goals but also picked up his fifth yellow of the season and will sit out one match. Farke also has a decision to make at right-back between Stefan Lainer and Joe Scally as Die Fohlen seek a first away win of the campaign.

The returning Berisha has scored three and assisted two of Augsburg's last six goals at home.

The Bavarians have the worst home record in the division with only five points from eight games.
