Augsburg have been in fine form recently, with three league wins on the bounce prior to a 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg and late 3-2 loss at Cologne on Sunday. A 1-0 victory over Bayern was the meat in their sandwich during that three game winning streak, with Mergim Berisha's composed finish giving Enrico Maaßen's side all three points when these two Bavarian rivals met a month ago. Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz was outstanding in that win but has missed their last two fixtures with a dead leg. There is some good news in the form of centre-back pairing Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Maximilian Bauer - who were suspended for the trip to Cologne - being back available, but Maaßen still has to manage a long injury list. Among the long-term absentees are Niklas Dorsch, Andre Hahn and Tobias Strobl, while Reece Oxford returned to training last week and could feature.
Bayern failed to score for the first time in 87 Bundesliga matches in the Matchday 7 loss to Augsburg - their second in succession at the WWK Arena. It was a frustrating day at the office for Julian Nagelsmann and his team, who enjoyed a release with a 5-0 thumping of Freiburg on Sunday to move second in the table. Bayern lost Leroy Sane to a thigh injury were and were also without the services of Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller at the weekend. Neuer, who almost scored a famous leveller in the previous meeting but was denied by an excellent Gikiewicz save, has been replaced by Sven Ulreich in the Bayern goal while out with a shoulder injury. Given that Ulreich played in the first round win over Viktoria Cologne - in which Mane also scored - Nagelsmann may opt to retain him between the sticks to allow Neuer extra time to recover. There could also be minutes for the likes of Golden Boy nominees Ryan Gravenberch and Mathys Tel.
Match stats
Daniel Caligiuri is the only member of the Augsburg squad to have lifted the DFB Cup, doing so with Wolfsburg in 2014/15.
The furthest Augsburg have ever reached in the DFB Cup was the semi-finals in the 2019/10 season, when they lost 2-0 to Werder Bremen.
This is the teams' fifth meeting in this competition. Bayern have won all four of the previous encounters: 6-0 in the 1983/84 second round, 2-0 in the round of 16 in both 2012/13 and 2013/14, and 3-1 in the 2016/17 second round.
Mane was on target in Bayern's first-round win over Viktoria Cologne, scoring his fifth goal for the club in just his sixth competitive outing. The Senegalese now has nine goals in all competitions in 2022/23.
Bayern are the record DFB Cup winners, having lifted the trophy 20 times, most recently in 2020.
However, the Reds have been knocked out of the competition at this stage in each of the last two seasons, losing 5-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach last year, and 8-7 on penalties to Holstein Kiel before that.
