Arsene Wenger tells Ole Gunnar Solskjaer how to manage Man Utd "crisis"

Ex- Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to protect Manchester United by not making the current crisis even worse after the 5-0 home defeat by rivals Liverpool.

United were resoundingly beaten by a superior Liverpool side who went in at the interval 4-0 up - the first team to do so at Old Trafford in Premier League history.

Naby Keita opened the scoring with just five minutes on the clock before Diogo Jota doubled the visitors lead eight minutes later, Mohamed Salah capping off a stunning opening 45 minutes with a brace.

The Egyptian international is arguably the best player in the world on current form and performed as such - sealing his hat-trick just five minutes after the restart.

Solskjaer's afternoon somehow managed to get even worse after Paul Pogba - who was only introduced at half-time, was sent off for a high tackle on Keita fifteen minutes after coming on.

As a result, Solskjaer's future as United boss is currently under intense scrutiny after three defeats in the last four league outings - but Wenger has offered some words of wisdom after a bleak day for the Red Devils.

The former Gunners boss was asked whether Solskjaer should address the team straight away or leave it 24 hours - Wenger was often famed for protecting his players in the wake of heavy defeats.

The Frenchman told beIN Sports : "You could say a few words and the first thing is to protect the club and the team, as much as you can use the press.

"Not to come out with statements and create an even a deeper crisis. You know where you are in the crisis, and you know you have a lot of work to do to get that just mentally right again in the team because that's a massive blow.

"Overall you try just to not make [things] more bad than it is already and to give that message to the players.

"You know that the crowd is always cool when they feel obligated. And the second thing, they look always for a responsible desk, and our job is the first response."

Wenger is one of the best managers in the history of the Premier League, but was also no stranger to a damaging defeat at the hands of rivals.

The 72-year-old was in charge of Arsenal for the infamous 8-2 drubbing they received at Old Trafford of all places.

Solskjaer has quashed any talk of him leaving his post as United boss immediately after the game.

The Norwegian told Sky Sports: "No. I've come too far, we've come too far as a group to give up now.

"It's not easy to say something apart from it's the darkest day I've had leading these players. We weren't good enough individually or as a team."
