Antonio Conte has declared he wants to build a Tottenham team fit for the club stadium and training ground. But the new Italian boss warned: "We have to change many, many things".
The former Chelsea and Juventus coach was over an hour late for his first pre-match press conference today because of a long video training session, Conte, 52, was in charge of his first match last night when Spurs hung on for a 3-2 win over Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference.
And Conte, who has won nine Serie A titles as a player and coach and the Premier League with Chelsea, admitted: "This is a big challenge. A big, big challenge. I know very well that this club is not winning for many years. But I think I am here to build the win.
"The win doesn't happen after one, two, three days. One month or two months. You must have vision. I think this club has a vision outside the pitch. Now I think we need to have a vision also on the pitch, on the football topic.

"This is important if you want to win. The club has shown that they are working very well with the stadium and the training ground. Now we need time and vision.
"Only if you have a vision in football can you do something important for the present and the future
"The club took this choice and I am pleased and honoured about this choice. I know that we need time. I need time to work and change something here on the pitch. Because outside it is fantastic, it is great. Maybe too much.
"On the pitch I think that we have to change many, many things. It can't happen in a short time. I must be honest. We are strong and we want to improve with the players. To work every day and build something that our fans can be proud of."
Conte, who succeeds Nuno Espirito Santo, has only signed an 18-month contract with the option for a further year.
"I think my contract is not a problem," he added. "Eighteen months we decided with the club. I understand also the sacrifices that the club made for me. It is ok. I think that the best things for us is to work together with the players and the club and to understand that we can work together for a long time. I hope so.
"If you want to work, you can work. You have a fantasti training ground. The club gives you everything. If you ask for something to improve the situation of the players. But at the same time, I know that we need to have patience. I am the first person. I need to have patience. Whenever you work with a team, especially when you start at the start of the season, you have one month to work and introduce yourself and your staff to the players. To go into the job during the season is not simple..
"For the contract, it is ok for me, My hope is to find the right link and right connection for a long time for sure."
In his first game Conte will face Everton and Rafa Benitez after losing his last match with Chelsea to the Spaniard's Newcastle side.
"I remember that I lost my last game in the Premier League against Benitiez," he recalled. "For sure our expectation is to have a good game. Goodison Park is not an easy place to play. At the same time, we want to try and improve the results, especially for our table
"It will not be easy. We need to work a lot to try and improve this team. Many aspects, not only tactically but also physically. We need a bit of time to do this. And we need to find the time. It is difficult."
