Angel Di Maria makes emotional Argentina retirement and Lionel Messi may follow

Angel Di Maria has confirmed he will retire from international football after this year's World Cup in Qatar.

And the Paris Saint-Germain star's club and international team-mate Lionel Messi has revealed his uncertainty about playing for Argentina next year.

Di Maria, 34, has enjoyed a glittering international career. He was part of the Argentina squad that won the Copa America last year - scoring the winner against Brazil in the final - and was triumphant at the Olympics in 2008 and the U20 World Cup in 2007.

The former Manchester United winger has also endured several near misses. He's lost two Copa America finals and the World Cup final in 2014 during his 121-cap career. Di Maria's PSG contract ends in June and it's unclear whether he'll stay in France.

"I just wanted to say thank you for the enormous love I have received," wrote Di Maria on Instagram, shortly after Argentina hammered Venezuela 3-0 on Thursday evening. "I always dreamed of everything I've experienced on this beautiful night.

"It was probably my last match with this shirt in Argentina and being able to say that it was a wonderful night is an understatement. "Thank you, thank you and a thousand times thank you.

"Now to congratulate the whole team for their huge performance - a perfect match for all. Let's continue growing and dreaming together. Let's go Argentina!"

Messi also provided an update about his international future on Thursday evening. The PSG forward, 34, is Argentina's captain and all-time leading scorer - finding the back of the net 81 times in 159 appearances - and has won three major trophies with his country.

Like Di Maria, Messi was part of Argentina's squad for last summer's Copa America and the Olympics in 2008. He has also won the U20 World Cup, lifting the title in 2005. Messi has lost three Copa America finals and the World Cup final during his career.

"I really don't know," said Messi - who turns 35 in June - when asked about his international future. "I think about what's coming, which is very close, [the qualifying match against] Ecuador, the preparation matches in June and September.

"There is a wonderful group here. People love me a lot and every day they show me more. I am very grateful. It does me good every time I come to Argentina. After the Copa America win, much more. Everything flows naturally and it is easier on the field.

"Winning helps make everything nicer and easier. [Venezuela] was the last game here [in Argentina] before going to the World Cup. I think it's farewell in a very good way."

Messi may also be considering his future at club level. The Barcelona legend has scored just two league goals since moving to PSG last summer and many are tipping him to return to Catalonia and play under his former team-mate Xavi at the Nou Camp.
