Kaiserslautern 0-0 Dynamo Dresden
A cagey first half at Kaiserslautern's Fritz Walter Stadion produced few clear-cut opportunites. The hosts had the best of them, with Terrence Boyd firing over from inside the box and the unmarked Kenny Prince Redondo miscuing Marlon Ritter's cross. Dynamo had been restricted to half chances at best until the 56th minute, when top scorer Christoph Daferner was denied by Matheo Raab in the Kaiserslautern goal to leave the tie all square ahead of Tuesday's second leg in Dresden.
The winner of the two-legged tie will play Bundesliga 2 football in 2022/23, with the loser part of the 20-team 3. Liga. Ingolstadt - winners of last season's play-off - and Erzgebirge Aue have have already been relegated from Bundesliga 2 automatically. Magdeburg and Eintracht Braunschweig - 3. Liga champions and runners-up respectively - take their places.
Dynamo, who spent one season back in 3. Liga before being promoted as champions last term, finished 16th in Bundesliga 2. Kaiserslautern - Bundesliga champions in 1990/91 and 1997/98 - are bidding to end a run of four straight seasons in the third division. The Red Devils ended 2021/22 as 3. Liga's third-placed team.
