Watford flop Steven Berghuis has revealed how Erik ten Hag has put him on the road to the World Cup.
Berghuis, 30, lasted just a season at Vicarage Road following his £4.5million arrival from FC Twente in 2015 and moved back to Holland with Feyenoord. But since linking up with Ten Hag at Ajax last summer, the midfielder has really nailed down a place in the Dutch squad and will be on his way to Qatar in November if he maintains his form.
Ten Hag is now being lined up to become manager of Manchester United - and Berghuis admitted his departure would be a devastating blow for the Amsterdam club.
Berghuis said: "I have not been with Ajax that long, but if you see what this manager has achieved with the squad for almost four-and-half years, it is incredible. Look at the average number of points and two Champions League campaigns. It is all so impressive. It will become a massive challenge for the new manager, but also for the club if he leaves. What you can see right now is that Ten Hag's signature is all over this Ajax side."
Berghuis caused a storm in Holland when he left Feyenoord to join their bitter rivals. But his form this season has answered all his critics - and the midfielder credits Ten Hag with helping him develop his versatility. Berghuis said: "Of course, it was a difficult transition to Ajax, an enormous challenge. I am particularly satisfied with the number of starts I got from Erik ten Hag.
"The fact that I have been able to develop myself under Ten Hag in several positions is also satisfying. I was regarded as nothing more than a right winger, but this manager has used my qualities in slightly different positions.
"The coach explains most of what he wants to tell his players on the basis of video material, both in the team analysis and also individually. Everyone receives an explanation about what is being asked and what this manager would like to see in each position."

United interim boss Ralf Rangnick said he is ready to brief the next United boss - even if it the club decide to look for someone other than Ten Hag. Rangnick, 63, was put in charge of the Red Devils after the club sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but will step aside at the end of the season having already agreed to move into an advisory role.
Rangnick said: "I have already done this, not to any managers, but inside the club. I have told them how I see the current squad and what needs to happen in my opinion. I spoke regularly with board members and they know what I think needs to happen in the summer. If he [the next manager] is interested and willing to speak about that and interested in my opinion I will see what happens.
"We have agreed upon a contract as an advisor. I know all of the managers with whom the club have so far spoken to are top managers and top coaches - if this includes Erik ten Hag, it is also true with him. I know which coaches they have spoken with so far and that's why I can say that all of the coaches they have spoken to are top coaches."
