And with that, he became just the fourth player in the club's history to score 20+ goals in five consecutive seasons in all competitions - Ian Rush, Roger Hunt and Gordon Hodgson also managing the feat.

Although Salah was playing, an under-strength Liverpool side was fielded as Divock Origi's second-half header sealed a 2-1 win at the San Siro.

The six-time European champions also sealed an unprecedented six out of six wins in their group, the first time an English side has managed that in the Champions League.

Six really is the magic number for Jurgen Klopp's men, who have won their last six matches in all competitions.

Salah has undoubtedly been central to Liverpool's success this term but they face a period of the season without the star man, as well as Sadio Mane and Naby Keita, with the Africa Cup of Nations to begin on January 9.

Should Egypt make the final, Liverpool will be without Salah for the best part of a month which will seriously test their Premier League title credentials.

But it will also test Salah's ability to beat his tally of 44 goals in all competitions in a single season, a record among players from Premier League clubs he shares with former Manchester United star Ruud van Nistelrooy, who did it in the 2002/03 season.

You wouldn't put it past the great man to do it though.
