6 Premier League transfers that would make sense in final week of January window

mirror.co.uk, 24 January 2022, 11:26
A number of Premier League clubs will be keen to do business before transfer deadline day, and here are some of the deals which would be sensible moves rather than panic buys

With time ticking away before the end of the January transfer window, a number of Premier League clubs still have big moves in their sights.

Newcastle United have been the biggest spenders so far, adding Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood to their ranks, but Eddie Howe's side remain in the bottom three going into the international break.

Other January deals include Aston Villa's addition of Lucas Digne and Phillipe Coutinho, while Watford have made three new additions and Brighton have added Polish wonderkid Kacper Kozlowski to their ranks.

The coming week is bound to see plenty of business carried out, some sensible and some more scattergun, with plenty of fans having stories of January panic buys from years gone by.

Here, Mirror Football identifies six moves involving Premier League clubs which - amid all the other noise - would make a lot of sense.

Who do you want your team to sign this January? Have your say in the comments section

Alexander Isak - Real Sociedad to Arsenal

It is no secret that Arsenal need a striker, regardless of whether they agree new terms with current starting number nine Alexandre Lacazette.

The Gunners' top scorer this season is Emile Smith Rowe, a midfielder who has gone nearly a month since his last goal, and recognised strikers Lacazette, Eddie Nketiah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have just seven league goals between them.

With their pursuit of Dusan Vlahovic looking more and more likely to be fruitless - at least in this window - it's worth them investing for that extra few per cent which could lead them into the Champions League.

Enter Isak, a proven scorer who continues to impress at Real Sociedad, and who could allow them to repeat the release clause trick they used to guarantee Thomas Partey's arrival from Spain in 2020.

Georginio Wijnaldum - Paris Saint-Germain to Newcastle United

Former Liverpool midfielder Wijnaldum has had a tough time since moving to France over the summer, failing to hold down a regular starting place at PSG.

The Dutchman is believed to be unhappy in the French capital, amid reports of cliques in the dressing room, prompting suggestions he could return to the Premier League.

Arsenal are among those linked, but a return to former club Newcastle could be an even better fit.

Wijnaldum was the Magpies' top scorer in his one and only season with the club, before moving to Anfield after their relegation in 2016, and a return could be a big sign of the club's ambition.

Dele Alli - Tottenham Hotspur to Paris Saint-Germain

If PSG want to make changes of their own, a different kind of reunion could be on the cards.

Dele Alli played the best football of his career under their current manager Mauricio Pochettino when the pair worked together at Tottenham, and the Argentine could help him rediscover some of that quality.

The England international was left out of Spurs' squad for their Premier League defeat at Chelsea and does not appear to be in Antonio Conte's plans.

While there may yet be interest from the Premier League, Alli would surely jump at the chance to play under Pochettino once more.

Adama Traore - Wolverhampton Wanderers to Tottenham Hotspur

One man who Conte does appear to be keen on is Wolves man Traore, with a switch to north London mooted more than once.

Traore was courted by former Spurs manager Tim Sherwood during his Barcelona days, but is a different player now and could be an option for Conte either at wing-back or in a front three.

Spurs' squad appears to still be in need of refreshment after the additions made by former boss Nuno Espirito Santo over the summer failed to have the desired effect.

Traore might not be the only new addition at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January, but he could be the one which makes the most sense.

Jesse Lingard - Manchester United to West Ham United

Manchester United midfielder Lingard is another man linked with Spurs, but fans of another London side will hope they're not yet out of the picture.

Lingard thrived on loan at West Ham last season, scoring nine goals and forcing his way back into the reckoning, but things haven't gone to plan since he returned to his parent club.

The 29-year-old has played just five minutes of first team football in 2022, and is keen to leave Old Trafford with his contract up in the summer.

While there are likely to be offers from a number of directions, Lingard appeared to be enjoying his football in east London and can pick up where he left off by making a permanent return.

Amadou Haidara - RB Leipzig to Manchester United

Finally, staying with Manchester United, it's hard to ignore the big neon sign saying "we need a new central midfielder".

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick admitted there were still issues with United's play in possession despite their weekend victory, and a joined-up midfield could go some way to addressing the problem.

Haidara is one of those who has been linked with the club for a while, in part due to his previous relationship with Rangnick, but the Malian international has remained at RB Leipzig thus far.

Still, with his involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations ending before the next round of Premier League fixtures, there could still be time for a last-minute approach.
