5 talking points as Salah delivers again in Champions League win over Porto

mirror.co.uk, 28 September 2021, 20:56

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool enjoyed a dominant win against Porto to maintain their unbeaten start to their Champions League campaign.

The Egyptian opened the scoring after 18 minutes when he tucked home a spill from Porto keeper Diogo Jota before adding a second after the break.

Sadio Mane had already doubled the Reds' advantage when he turned in James Milner's cross, with the latter having replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold in the starting line-up.

Porto pulled a goal back through Mehdi Taremi, before Roberto Firmino completed the hammering with two goals in 10 minutes.

Here, Mirror Football looks at five talking points as Liverpool maintained their lead at the top of Group B….

Henderson breaks milestone

Jordan Henderson made his 400th Liverpool appearance in the win over Porto

In being selected to start in central midfield at the Estadio Do Dragao, Jordan Henderson became just the 27 th player to make 400 appearances for Liverpool.

The England international is the first Reds star since Steven Gerrard met the landmark figure in October 2007.

Henderson has taken 10 years to reach the milestone, having joined from Sunderland in the summer of 2011.

It was a typically solid display from the midfielder, who nearly capped his night with a goal, though his curling free-kick was tipped onto the bar by Porto keeper Diogo Costa.

Ahead of the game Klopp hailed his captain and tipped Henderson to add at least another 100 appearances to his record.

"It's a big number and a lot more to come. If he stays fit he will easily make 500," Klopp told BT Sport.

Salah continues to star

Mohamed Salah scored two of Liverpool's five goals

As if anyone was in any doubt as to why Mohamed Salah deserves a bumper new deal, he proved it once again against Porto.

The Egyptian carried the Reds going forward last season and has started the season in ominous form, scoring six goals in eight appearances.

Fresh from breaking Roger Hunt's record of being the quickest player to score 100 top-flight goals for the club, Salah was on the scoresheet again against Porto.

He turned in Diogo Costa's spill of Curtis Jones' shot to secure Liverpool's second successive win in the Champions League.

In tucking home after 18 minutes, Salah also became the first player to score in six successive Liverpool games since April 2018, which astonishingly was himself.

He then completed his brace on the hour mark when he controlled Curtis Jones's pass before firing in, to also become the second highest African scorer in the Champions League's history.

Reds maintain Porto record

Portuguese giants Porto must be sick of the sight of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool team, having faced them five times since the German took over.

In that time, the Reds have won four games, scored 15 goals and kept three clean sheets, to totally dominate the fixture.

Remarkably, that means that Klopp's side have won more matches, scored more goals and kept more clean sheets against Porto than they have against any other opponent in the Champions League.

That record also means that the Reds are top of Group B, having won both of their opening two matches.

Milner makes right-back claim

James Milner replaced the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back

With Trent Alexander-Arnold ruled out through injury, James Milner once deputised at right-back for the visitors.

Milner had shown his defensive abilities in the win over Crystal Palace, when he effectively dealt with Wilfried Zaha.

Against Porto, he was again solid at the back, winning six defensive duels, making four recoveries and winning three aerial duels.

Who will win the Champions League this season? Comment below.

But he also impressed going forward, providing the assist for Mane's goal at the end of the first-half.

That will certainly provide some comfort to Klopp, who had admitted before the game that Alexander-Arnold could also miss Manchester City 's visit to Anfield on Sunday.

"It didn't look serious and in the end it was serious. He is out for today for sure and it does not look great for the Manchester City game as well," Klopp told BT Sport.

Mane's magic

Sadio Mane scored Liverpool's second goal in the hammering of Porto

Sadio Mane has bounced back from a poor season last year in some style, scoring his fourth goal of the season on Wednesday night.

The attacker was left free at the back post to turn in James Milner's cross at the end of the first-half to settle any nerves from the dominant visitors.

That was his fifth goal against Porto in his Champions League career, the most amount of strikes by a Reds player against a single opponent in the competition.

He was also his 20 th goal in the tournament since joining Liverpool from Southampton in the summer of 2016.

That means he has become just the third player in Liverpool's history to meet that milestone in the Champions League era.

He joins an illustrious list of legendary captain Steven Gerrard, who scored 30 times, and Salah, who notched his 27 th and 28 th in Wednesday's win.
