Wycombe star collapses on pitch in worrying scenes after match vs Plymouth

Wycombe Wanderers striker Tjay De Barr worryingly collapsed on the pitch following his side's 1-0 defeat away to Plymouth Argyle before being taken off on a stretcher.

The 22-year-old Gibraltaran came on as a late substitute and is understood to have been involved in a collision which left him reeling on his haunches for around 15 seconds during the League One match. De Barr then collapsed shortly after the full-time whistle, leaving fans and players at Home Park seriously concerned for his condition, as medical staff swiftly got to work.

Half an hour after the incident, Wycombe confirmed in a statement that the 29-times capped Gibraltar international was in a "good condition." "Tjay De Barr has been treated on-site by medics and is in a good condition, but will go to hospital for further tests," the club, nicknamed the Chairboys, said.

"Thank you to everyone for their well wishes, and to the medical staff for their swift and expert assistance." Plymouth responded to their tweet by saying: "Our thanks are extended to everyone who acted swiftly to ensure Tjay received quick treatment, and our best wishes are with him and the rest of the Chairboys family."

De Barr had been brought on in the 71st of the contest by Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth. The Chairboys were trailing 1-0 thanks to Dan Scarr's 33rd-minute goal. Plymouth centre-back Scarr had converted Adam Randell's cross with a left-footed finish from the centre of the penalty area, leaving it to the visitors to respond after half-time.

Ainsworth and co couldn't find an equaliser, though, as the Pilgrims - led by 38-year-old up-and-coming boss Steven Schumacher - consolidated their four-point lead over Ipswich Town at the top of the League One table. Wycombe, meanwhile, are eighth, outside of the division's play-off spots on goal difference.

But supporters will be more concerned about De Barr's wellbeing, having made his third league appearance for the club down on the south coast in their final fixture of 2022. As reported by Plymouth Live, Plymouth gaffer Schumacher said post-match: "Our thoughts are with their player Tjay De Barr. He has took a nasty bang it looks like in his chest - in his ribs. Fingers crossed he's okay."

Fans tweeted their concern, with one Pilgrims fan saying: "The very best wishes to your player, Tjay De Barr from an Argyle fan! Hope everything is OK and he is back playing for WWFC as soon as possible." In classy fashion, another tweeted: "Great win tonight but all thoughts with the Wycombe player, Tjay De Barr, who needed urgent medical attention at the end of the game. Some things are bigger than football."

Another supporter from the home side echoed that sentiment by saying: "Really pleased with three points for the Argyle but thoughts are with the Wycombe player Tjay De Barr - praying the lad is okay. Some things are more important than football."
