Mohamed Salah scored from the resulting penalty just before half-time in a quickfire double that saw Liverpool take the lead against Brighton.
But fans were left mystified over why Gross was not shown a red card after hauling down Szoboszlai in the box from what was perceived as a goal-scoring opportunity.
However, it was adjudged that the Hungarian was not moving towards goal at the time as he looked to gain possession of the ball.
It was, therefore, not seen as a denial of a goal-scoring opportunity and thus no card was shown to Gross.
But fans are not satisfied by the decision, with one saying: "Must admit I'm not sure how Gross wasn't at least booked for that tug on Szoboszlai for the penalty. He'd have been sent off 13 times last weekend"

Another wrote: "That should have been a red card for Pascal Gross."
And a third put: "How was Van Dijk sent-off at Newcastle and Gross wasn't? I just don't get it."
Gross was guilty of almost ripping Szoboszlai's shirt off him after a calamity at the back.
As Brighton tried to play out through their goalkeeper, the ball was intercepted and led to Szoboszlai and Darwin Nunez just metres out and looking to score.

Just moments earlier, Salah had equalised for the Reds after more disastrous defending - this time from Lewis Dunk.
The England international's pass into midfield was easily intercepted and then he jumped in to try fix his error.
But the ball was played through the gap he vacated, where Harvey Elliott cleverly left Luis Diaz's pass, which found Salah unmarked.
One-on-one with Bart Verbruggen, the Egyptian made no mistake to score before his second from the penalty spot, making it eight goals in 13 matches against Brighton.
The Seagulls had taken the lead when Liverpool were also guilty of defensive errors, this time from Virgil van Dijk.
His pass to Alexis Mac Allister saw the Argentine swarmed by Brighton players before Simon Adingra sunk the ball past Alisson, who was off his line.
Dunk did atone for his error, though, as he nudged home from a free-kick, his third goal against Liverpool of his career.
