Vincent Kompany has been unveiled as the new Burnley manager following their relegation to the Championship.
The former Manchester City defender takes up the post with the club still reeling from their Premier League exit on the final day of last season.
The 36-year-old's previous managerial role saw him spend three years at Anderlecht in his native Belgium, with one year as player-manager and the last two spent solely as boss after retiring from playing. He becomes the permanent replacement for Sean Dyche, who left Turf Moor in April after almost a decade in charge.
"Burnley Football Club is a truly historic English side and it is an honour to be appointed first-team manager," Kompany told Burnley's website. "I'm excited by the challenge ahead. I'm looking forward to getting to work with the players and creating a positive, winning team for our fans when we return to Turf Moor. I've been impressed by the bBoard's vision for the club which aligns with my own and I look forward to playing my part as we enter an important season."
Burnley Chairman, Alan Pace added: "We are absolutely delighted to welcome Vincent to Burnley. He is a proven leader and I've been very impressed with his ideas for Burnley Football Club, his appetite to succeed and his focus on leading the club back to the Premier League. Vincent has shown impressive credentials in leading one of Belgium's biggest teams back to European football and a cup final last season and we've been excited by his philosophy, approach and ambition for the club."
It is unclear as yet whether any of Kompany's coaching staff from Belgium will be following him to Lancashire, although one of his former charges, Simon Davies, appears set for a move to Tottenham. He is set to join the academy set-up at Spurs after a similar role at Manchester City in the past.
Burnley went down on the final day of the Premier League season. They lost at home to Newcastle and that result, combined with Leeds winning at Brentford, meant the Clarets' six-year stay in the top flight was over.
Caretaker Mike Jackson made a decent fist of it following Dyche's departure but he cut a dejected figure immediately after their loss to the Magpies.
"It's really raw at the moment, I am gutted for the fans and the players," said Jackson. "It's hard to find words sometimes. I just said to the group, they've given everything for the games we've been here, and sometimes that's all you can ask of anybody. I just thanked them for what they have done as a group and how they have come together."
The Clarets last week confirmed a clutch of players would be leaving the club. The most high-profile exit was that of captain Ben Mee after 11 years in Lancashire. Aaron Lennon, Phil Bardsley, Dale Stephens, Erik Pieters and James Tarkowski are also leaving.
The new Championship season begins on July 30 with fixtures set to be released on June 23. The Clarets are currently sixth favourites with Skybet to seal an instant return to the top flight.
