The Liverpool star and unlikely Blackburn hero Nunez and Haaland are aiming to better

talksport.com, 17 June 2022, 13:03
The 2021/22 Premier League season saw Manchester City and Liverpool blow the league away without using a recognised striker.

However, that is set to change this year, as both sides have splashed the cash to bring in two fabulous forwards.

City, the defending champions moved early to snap up Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £52million.

And the Reds responded by bringing in Darwin Nunez from Benfica for an initial £64m.

Now, managers Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp like to rotate, but given the money spent, it would be a surprise if both don't play the majority of league matches this year.

Haaland endured a bit of an injury-hit campaign last year, but despite this, he still scored 29 goals in 30 games, so you have to wonder what he could do in a City shirt.

But Nunez enjoyed a sublime season himself and became one of the most in-demand strikers around.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal were all linked, but the Reds got the deal done, and with 34 goals in 41 appearances, you can see why.

So, two very talented players who will fancy their chances of hitting the ground running.

Here, talkSPORT.com looks at other brilliant debut seasons in the Premier League.

5: Roque Santa Cruz - 19 goals and seven assists

When Blackburn Rovers signed Santa Cruz in the summer of 2007 from Bayern Munich, no one expected the big forward to end the campaign with 19 goals and seven assists.

The then Paraguay international had only managed two Bundesliga goals the season before, but he adapted to life at Ewood Park instantly and enjoyed an incredible debut year.

He was so good in the 2007/08 season that only Cristiano Ronaldo, Emmanuel Adebayor and Fernando Torres finished ahead of him in the goalscoring charts.

4: Fernando Torres - 24 goals and four assists

In the same year that Santa Cruz arrived in England, so did a Spanish forward from Atletico Madrid named Fernando Torres.

His debut season was brilliant as he scored two hat-tricks and helped the Reds finish fourth, and the mixture of pace and power made a mockery of several defences up and down the country.

Torres had a fantastic career at Anfield before his fateful move to Stamford Bridge, but this year was something else from the Spaniard.

3: Kevin Phillips - 30 goals

Now, this might be a surprising name to some, but in Phillips' first Premier League campaign after joining Sunderland from Watford, he scored 30 goals in 36 games.

This earned him the European Golden Boot that year, and his displays in 1999/2000 have to go down as one of the best first seasons the Premier League has ever seen.

Phillips scored one hat-trick and eight braces as the Black Cats achieved their highest ever top-flight finish of seventh.

2: Sergio Aguero 23 goals and ten assists

Aguero's first year in England will always be remembered because of his late goal against QPR that snatched Manchester City's first Premier League trophy with the last kick of the game.

However, he was also instrumental in putting the Citizens into that position in the first place.

Aguero made 34 appearances for City and he nearly averaged a goal contribution every match.

The Argentinian international couldn't have gotten off to a better start at the Etihad, as he scored eight times in his first five fixtures.

And he ended the year with six goals in as many games, so he played a huge role in City's first Premier League title.

1: Mohamed Salah - 32 goals and 11 assists

When Liverpool splashed out just over £30million on Salah, a few eyebrows were raised.

He had performed reasonably well the season before for Roma, but it did seem like a lot of money.

However, by the end of the 2017/18 campaign, he had already repaid his value in Premier League goals alone.

He managed five in his first ten before bagging 27 in the remaining 28 fixtures, which is pretty staggering.

But he also provided 11 assists across the year, ending his first-ever season in the Premier League with over a goal contribution per match.

So the bar has been set for Nunez and Haaland, and it's very high indeed.
