Alex Neil's side beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 to end their four-year stay in England's third tier and are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations this summer.

The Black Cats will fly out to Portugal for a pre-season camp where they will play Scottish giants Rangers before facing Roma.

Mourinho's Giallorossi will be formidable opposition for Sunderland, having won the UEFA Europa Conference League back in May.

The Special One is all too familiar with Sunderland from his time in England, with the Wearsiders memorably ending his 77-match unbeaten home record in the Premier League when he was at Chelsea.

Sunderland came from behind to secure a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge in 2014 with Mourinho's post-match rant accruing him a £10,000 fine.

This pre-season friendly will take place on Wednesday, July 13.

The game at the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira in Portugal will be an early one, with kick-off scheduled for 11am UK time.

Sunderland assistant Martin Canning: "The boys have come in, they've been great and they have worked really hard, but you have to get game fitness as well.

"There's obviously more to the game and when you play with senior players they keep you right and you learn. It's great for the older boys as well to pass that experience on, so it benefits everyone.

"There has been a lot of running, but a lot of the hard work is done with the ball as well.

"They've had plenty of touches and the next progression now are the games, we've had two today and then we step it up and look forward to the season."
