Rodgers urged to leave and join club 'like Villa' but tells talkSPORT he's staying

Brendan Rodgers has been told to agree the termination of his Leicester City deal so he can join a club 'like Aston Villa'.

The Foxes boss cut a frustrated figure at Amex Stadium as his team lost 5-2 to Brighton in the Premier League.

A torrid summer has seen the club lose star centre-back Wesley Fofana and no.1 goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, with only Wout Faes and Alex Smithies replacing them as the club attempt to balance the books.

It's led to an awful start to the season with just one point from six games leaving them bottom of the table.

The embarrassing nature of their capitulation against the Seagulls saw Manchester United legend Roy Keane lay into the team.

"No commitment. No desire," he fumed. "Brendan is in trouble with that performance in the second half.

"The Leicester players were nowhere near good enough. [They] gave up the fight. Shocking."

Meanwhile, on talkSPORT, ex-Arsenal star Perry Groves offered a solution for Rodgers.

Speaking on the Sunday Session, he said: "I don't think he's going to last this week. I think, if he had anything about him, he would go to Leicester [and agree a mutual termination].

"Managers don't resign, do they? But he's lost his enthusiasm, he had an air of resignation half-way through the transfer window when there were no players coming in, didn't he?

"[An FA Cup win] and two fifth place finishes in the Premier League. They were really batting above their average.

"What he will be feeling is, he can't get any more out of this group of players. When it's the same group of players, you have the same voices, the same training sessions, the same information is coming across.

"One of two things has to happen. Either you get five or six new players in to give everyone a lift or you get a new manager in who comes with fresh ideas and fresh enthusiasm.

"Brendan Rodgers, you can tell in his body language, you can tell when you have been interviewing him, he's lost that spark.

"He thinks you're not giving me the tools that I can do my job with so there should be a mutual agreement between both parties because, if he stays there, with this same group of players, Leicester have every chance of getting relegated."

But former Sunderland and England star Micky Gray queried what the future might now have in store for Rodgers.

"Where does Brendan go now? The jobs that you probably say he was going to go to over the next couple of months, if he was to leave Leicester, are taken now. That leaves him in a really sticky situation."

Sam Matterface added: "It's a real problem for him because he's managed Liverpool. He's managed Celtic. He's gone to Leicester and hoped to build something and I would imagine he did that as a strategic move so he could end up at another one of the big top-four clubs again.

"It has not worked out, even though he's won the FA Cup, which sounds weird.

Groves came in again: "He'll have to be realistic. I think that he would want a project.

"Like Eddie Howe has gone into Newcastle, no one is going to get the financial backing that Newcastle have but if there is a club that gets new owners come in and have a project.

"Off the top of my head, someone like Aston Villa, where you will be backed financially and he says a project there that excites him. That's the next club on the radar, I think.

"But from his point of view, you can tell he's lost his mojo completely at Leicester."

But Rodgers, speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, insisted he wasn't going anywhere.

"Listen," he said. "I'm young and fresh as a manager and I have enjoyed every minute of my time at Leicester and I will until continue to until someone tells me differently.

"I love working with the group of players. We just have to stay strong and stay focussed. It's been a difficult start for us and try to work hard to get that confidence back into the players."
