Preview: Sweden Women vs. Portugal Women - prediction, team news, lineups

sportsmole.co.uk, 15 July 2022, 15:58
Sweden Women will be looking to clinch the point they need to reach the Women's Euro 2022 knockout rounds when they face Portugal Women on Sunday.

Portugal, meanwhile, know that they need to win to stand any chance of progressing from the group stage, although even three points may not be enough for a top two place.

Match preview

Sweden can be pleased to their start to the tournament after collecting four points from their opening two matches, leaving them in second place ahead of the final group game.

They played out a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands to open their campaign before edging out Switzerland on Wednesday to secure their first win of Euro 2022.

Fridolina Rolfo's left-footed strike gave Sweden the lead, but Switzerland hit back within two mates courtesy of Ramona Bachmann's curling effort.

Despite conceding an equaliser almost immediately, Peter Gerhardsson's side still left Bramall Lane with all three points after Hanna Bennison found a winning goal in the 79th minute.

Sweden will now turn their attention to Sunday's contest, where a point will be enough to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

After picking up a point from their opening two games, Portugal are still looking for their first win of Euro 2022.

Francisco Neto's side fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Switzerland in their tournament opener, but they were unable to build upon that point against the Netherlands.

Portugal looked to have repeated their performance from matchday one after they clawed their way back into the contest following two early goals from the Netherlands.

Carole Costa dispatched her spot-kick before Diana Silva restored parity, however, a 62nd-minute strike from Danielle van de Donk condemned Portugal to a 3-2 defeat.

Portugal know that if they win and the Netherlands avoid defeat then they would move above Sweden into second place on the head-to-head result, although a number of permutations could come into play if Portugal and Switzerland pick up victories on Sunday.

Team News

Magdalena Eriksson started Sweden's victory over Switzerland in an unfamiliar left-back position, but the Chelsea defender could revert to her preferred centre-back role on Sunday.

With Eriksson set to move across in the centre of defence, Nathalie Bjorn could drop to the bench, while Jonna Andersson expected to come into the side to slot into the vacated left-back position.

Meanwhile, Stina Blackstenius will retain her place in the forward line after coming into the starting lineup against Switzerland.

As for Portugal, they could name an unchanged lineup for the third consecutive game, despite failing to win any of their opening two matches.

After conceding two early goals in both of their group games, the centre-back pairing of Diana Gomes and Costa will be looking to offer more resilience from kick-off.

Diana Silva opened her account for the tournament against the Netherlands, and the 27-year-old will be looking to find the net once again when she features in a front three alongside Ana Borges and Jessica Silva.

Sweden Women possible starting lineup:

Lindahl; Glas, Ilestedt, Eriksson, Andersson; Angeldal, Asllani, Seger; Rolfo, Blackstenius, Hurtig

Portugal Women possible starting lineup:

Pereira; Amado, Gomes, Costa, Marchao; Norton, D. Silva, Ferreira; Borge, J. Silva, D. Silva

We say: Sweden Women 2-1 Portugal Women
