Preview: Reading Women vs. Tottenham Hotspur Ladies - prediction, team news, lineups

sportsmole.co.uk, 2 December 2022, 14:51
Reading Women will look to end a three-game winless run in the Women's Super League when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur Ladies to Berkshire on Sunday.

The Royals currently occupy 11th position, while Tottenham sit in seventh place after losing 3-0 to Chelsea in their most recent league game.

Match preview

After beginning the WSL season with four consecutive defeats, Reading finally claimed their first league win of the season when they claimed a narrow victory over Leicester on October 30.

Although the Royals followed their win over the Foxes with two straight defeats they managed to salvage a point from their last league game against Liverpool.

Tia Primmer and Natasha Dowie gave Reading a 2-1 lead after Katie Stengel had opened the scoring, but Stengel's second goal of the game and a Rhiannon Roberts effort saw the encounter swing in Liverpool's favour before Sanne Troelsgaard rescued a point for the Royals with an 89th-minute effort.

The 3-3 draw with the Reds leaves Kelly Chambers' side one place and four points above Leicester, who sit in the one and only relegation spot, with the Foxes are yet to pick up a point this season.

After thrashing Championship side Southampton 3-0 in the League Cup last weekend, Reading do have the chance to claim consecutive victories on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have had a mixed start to the WSL season with their opening six games resulting in three wins and three defeats.

All three of those losses have taken place against teams currently in the top four, including a 3-0 defeat to London rivals Chelsea in their most recent league game.

Like Reading, Rehanne Skinner's side managed to return to winning ways in the League Cup last weekend, as they thrashed second-tier Coventry United.

Evelina Summanen, Rosella Ayane and Kerys Harrop all found the net in the opening 25 minutes to give Spurs a comfortable lead, before Amy Turner added a fourth on the hour mark, and although Coventry pulled a goal back in stoppage time, Lenna Gunning-Williams scored in the 93rd minute to wrap up a commanding 5-1 victory.

Having already beaten Reading 2-1 in their League Cup group this season, Tottenham may be confident that they can collect all three points on Sunday.

Team News

Chambers has the majority of her Reading squad available to her for Sunday's contest, although she will be without the services of Deanne Rose, who misses out through injury.

After featuring as a substitute against Liverpool, Emma Harries made her first start since returning from a long spell on the sidelines in the League Cup win over Southampton, but she may feature on the bench on Sunday as the Royals manage her comeback.

Chambers made a number of changes to her lineup last weekend, but the likes of Charlie Wellings and Natasha Dowie could return to the starting lineup against Tottenham.

As for the visitors, they are unable to call upon Ellie Brazil, Kyah Simon and Ria Percival, who are all long-term injury absentees.

Skinner rotated her squad for the win over Coventry, and as a result, a number of first-team regulars are expected to be brought back into the side on Sunday, including Shelina Zadorsky and Asmita Ale.

Ash Neville and Celin Bizet Ildhusoy are also likely to return to the starting lineup, with the pair set to provide the width for Tottenham.

Reading Women possible starting lineup:

Moloney; Evans, Caldwell, Mukandi; Eikeland, Vanhaevermaet, Primmer, Rowe, Woodham; Dowie, Wellings

Tottenham Hotspur Ladies possible starting lineup:

Korpela; Turner, Bartrip, Zadorsky, Ale; Bizet, James, Summanen, Neville; Spence, Naz

We say: Reading Women 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur Ladies
