Argyle began the night by paying credit to their groundskeeping team on social media, who had managed to make Home Park playable despite the torrential downpour that caused havoc at times during the match.
Once the game began though, they were no longer able to work their magic.
And by the end of the game, it made for comical viewing.
Plymouth raced into an early lead thanks to Brendan Galloway's sixth-minute opener.
After just 15 minutes, it was 2-0 as Conor Grant doubled the lead.
At half-time, the pitch got 15 minutes of treatment, and then play resumed.
As it reached the latter stages, the match arguably could've been called off.
It was simply impossible to predict whether or not the ball was going to bounce and great sprays of water splashed upwards whenever the grass was touched.
This resulted in one of the most ridiculous goals in recent history in the fourth minute of added time.
An understandably underhit backpass from Bolton's defence gifted the ball to Danny Mayor.
As Mayor charged towards goal, goalkeeper Joel Dixon overcommitted himself and was left stranded with the attacker knocking the ball around him.
He now had an open goal, but this was not as simple as it sounds.
Mayor carried the ball towards goal, only for it to get held up by the waterlogged pitch as he sprinted past it.
Ryan Hardie was there to pick the ball up and continue the attack, but then the exact same happened to him as defenders approached and upped the pressure.
Thankfully for Plymouth though, the ball then fell to Ryan Broom who smashed it home.
He celebrated by chest sliding in the wet and practicing his front crawl as his teammates joined him.
Bolton boss Ian Evatt wasn't impressed though. "It's farcical but what's frustrating from my perspective is we're still trying to play short on a pitch where the ball's not even moving or rolling and I can't for the life of me think why we're not communicating to play longer and recognise that.
"That's down to naivety, but as I said, it's been a tough week/10 days of really difficult results and performances, but that doesn't make us a bad team."
