Mitrovic reacts to goal record and sends Carvalho message to Liverpool

Fulham sealed the Championship title with a 7-0 win over Luton and a brace from Serbian goal machine Mitrovic ensured he overtook Guy Whittingham's goal record that had stood for almost 30 years Aleksandar Mitrovic holds aloft the Sky Bet Championship Trophy following Fulham's win over Luton

Aleksandar Mitrovic has enjoyed the season of his life.

Going into the current campaign, the Serbian had hit double figures in three of his four seasons at Fulham so he had shown his talents in front of goal. But never had he enjoyed a prolific period as this.

Monday saw the 27-year-old notch a scarcely-believable 43rd league goal of the season in a thumping 7-0 win at home to Luton Town. The victory secured not only the Championship title for the already-promoted Cottagers and saw them surpass the 100-goal mark for the season.

But it also saw Mitrovic overtake Guy Whittingham's tally of 42 goals in the second tier. That particular feat was achieved in the 1992-93 season for Portsmouth.

But Mitrovic hit a brace against the Hatters to move past Whittingham on a night of celebrations at Craven Cottage. Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, the former Newcastle man admits breaking the record completed a "perfect" night for him.

"I always say that I don't try and think about the record but when you get close everybody starts talking so of course I wanted to break it," he said. "And today it happened and it was special. So I think the season has finished just how we wanted it to in our dreams, with a big win at home in front of our crowd. And I broke the record so everything was perfect."

Mitrovic's post-match interview was conducted alongside talented midfielder Fabio Carvalho. The 19-year-old has been another stand-out performer for Marco Silva's side chipping in with a healthy contribution of 10 goals and eight assists.

January saw a proposed move to Liverpool break down at the last minute but it is widely expected a deal will be announced this month, with Carvalho's contract set to expire. The expectation is that the Reds will still secure the services of the Lisbon-born star for a fee believed to be in the region of £5million. When quizzed post-match over his future, Carvalho remained coy.

"We'll see what happens," he said. "Right now, I'm just trying to enjoy the moment and I can't thank these fans enough. We'll see what happens."

Carvalho, who is enjoying his first full season of senior football, also won plenty of praise from Mitrovic, who told Liverpool the level of talent they will be getting. Mitrovic said of his colleague: "To be honest I cannot find the words to describe him. I know he's a little bit shy and so I'm not going to praise him so much!

"But he's an amazing young boy who loves football so much, who works so hard and puts a lot of effort in away from the pitch. He wants to learn always. He's always so calm and I think he has a big future ahead of him. We'll see what happens but I hope we play a few more games together because I've enjoyed this season playing next to him."

Fulham round off their season on Saturday with a trip to Championship play-off contenders Sheffield United.
