Real Madrid have reportedly approached Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards and believe they will be able to land him at the end of the season.
Edwards, who has been credited with helping to overhaul the recruitment system in place at Anfield, is set to leave the Premier League giants next summer.
The 42-year-old has been with Liverpool for 10 years but announced in a letter to supporters that this current campaign would be his last.
"All good things must come to an end and, in my case, I recently completed my final summer window as Liverpool sporting director," he told the club's website.

"Even writing those words seems a bit surreal, but at the end of this season I will pack up my laptop and leave my office at the AXA Training Centre for the last time."
According to the Independent, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been highly impressed with Edwards' work in the transfer market, having signed the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker.
The report adds that whilst pursuing a number of Reds stars, including Salah, they changed their top target to Edwards himself.
Perez accept that Madrid will have to alter their transfer strategy in the light of the failed European Super League project, with Spanish clubs facing particular financial hardship since the Covid pandemic.
Edwards' task would be to help revitalise an ageing squad with shrewd arrivals complimented by big money arrivals, as per their Galactico heritage.
Newcastle United ambitious approached the outgoing Liverpool director, only for that to be swiftly rejected, something which hasn't happened with the Madrid enquiry.
Speaking more about his decision to leave Merseyside, Edwards said: "Over my time here we have changed so many things (hopefully for the better) but someone new brings a different perspective, new ideas and can hopefully build on (or change) the things that have been put in place beforehand.
"That's how I believe businesses/football clubs stay ahead; you need to evolve and at the heart of this kind of process is always people.
"That evolution has always been central to Liverpool's history and I hope that this is one thing that doesn't change."
Julian Ward is set to replace Edwards, who will work alongside manager Jurgen Klopp in the summer window in 2022.
