Mbappe already in France's top 10 scorers and is two goals off legend's tally

The 23-year-old is now only two goals off French legend Zinedine Zidane's tally, too, as he chases down the likes of Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann, Thierry Henry and Olivier Giroud.

Mbappe netted for Les Bleus to make it 3-1 in their eventual 4-1 victory over Australia in Group D at the 2022 World Cup on Tuesday.

His goal marked his 29th in 60 international appearances, lifting him into the country's top 10 scorers and above former midfielder Youri Djorkaeff.

The youngster is now one behind Jean-Pierre Papin and Just Fontaine who sit on 30, whilst he's just two off legendary midfielder Zidane, who scored 31 in 106 games.

David Trezeguet is in sixth on 34 goals from his 71 caps, whilst Benzema - who won't have a chance to boost his tally at this tournament due to being injured - is on 37 in 97, and Michel Platini is fourth with 41 goals.

Mbappe will of course have his eyes on the top three slots, taken up by Griezmann (42), and joint leaders Giroud and Henry (51 each).

However, given Henry and Giroud's number of appearances is around double Mbappe's, the PSG star is nailed on to hit their tally eventually at the rate he's scoring.

Meanwhile, AC Milan star Giroud will be focusing on overtaking Henry, after he made history to go level with Henry as he scored in the game against the Socceroos.

He told talkSPORT after the match: "It means a lot to be next to Thierry Henry on the national team top scorer sheet. It is unbelievable and couldn't hope for a better start at the World Cup.

"We reacted well after conceding this goal at the beginning of the game. It was a bad start but we showed great team character."

France next face Denmark on Saturday at 4pm, as they look to retain their world title at Qatar.
