Man Utd loanee sends reminder to Rangnick as Bishop is given dressing down

mirror.co.uk, 5 December 2021, 17:00
Mirror Sport takes a look at how Manchester United's crop of young players out on loan in the EFL fared over the weekend as they took part in Championship and FA Cup second round ties

Manchester United are set to begin a new era under Ralf Rangnick.

Sunday will see the German coach take charge of his first Red Devils game since being announced as interim manager.

United host Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

He takes over from Michael Carrick who oversaw three unbeaten games as caretaker before departing the club in midweek.

Over the summer, United sent a batch of players out on loan. And a handful of them are in the EFL as they look to continue their development.

Here, we look at how those players got on over the weekend for their respective temporary employers.

Which of these players are best-placed to break into the first team at United? Let us know in the comments section

James Garner

It was a day to remember for Garner as he scored one and assisted one in Nottingham Forest's 2-0 win at home to Peterborough United.

Asked to play in a slightly unfamiliar role as No.10, Garner showed glimpses of the kind of form he displayed regularly in his first spell on loan at Forest last season.

He really shone after the interval against Posh, firing home the opener before setting up Ryan Yates for the second from a corner.

Reds' boss Steve Cooper said of Garner: "That was a personal challenge for Jimmy, to get in the six-yard box, and he did.

"You've got to be there to score, and he was."

Ethan Laird

Laird played 78 minutes for Swansea as they fell to defeat away at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

But he struggled to impose himself on the contest, despite Swansea bossing possession as they usually do.

He could only manage a solitary attempt on goal but it was straight at Boro goalkeeper Luke Daniels. He was replaced by Joel Latibeaudiere late on.

Di'Shon Bernard

Bernard played the full 90 minutes as Hull City continued their resurgent form with a respectable 1-1 draw away at Reading.

The Tigers are now unbeaten in five games and although Bernard will be disappointed to not have been able to contribute to a clean sheet, it was a wonder goal that broke the deadlock.

Reading's Tom Holmes executed a spectacular overhead kick from a few yards out. But Mallik Wilks fired back in response to ensure spoils were shared.

Ethan Galbraith

The Northern Ireland youngster sat out Doncaster's FA Cup second round defeat at home to Mansfield Town.

Rovers are managerless after sacking Richie Wellens midweek. Caretaker Gary McSheffrey said of Galbraith's absence: "He (Ethan) just felt a tight hip flexor.

"I think he felt it Wednesday night but grinded it through. He did a fitness test and he still felt sore.

"I said to him that 'I'd love to have you out there but one thing I don't want is to have you missing for the next few games.'

"Hopefully it's good news for him on Monday but we'll wait and see."

Nathan Bishop

Whilst Galbraith was commiserating his teammates, Bishop was celebrating a mini-cup shock for Mansfield.

Bishop played the full 90 minutes in a topsy-turvy 3-2 win that secures the Stags' place in the third round of the FA Cup.

However, that didn't save him from getting a slight bit of criticism from his boss Nigel Clough.

Clough said: "The only one I'm disappointed in at the moment is Nathan Bishop because I think the ratio of goals he's conceding at the moment to the number of shots he's having is incredibly high.

"I'm not quite sure how he's not keeping clean sheets."

D'Mani Mellor

Mellor's nightmare spell at Salford City shows no sign of changing. The youngster has featured just once for the Ammies since arriving on loan - and that was back in August.

They face Chesterfield in the FA Cup on Sunday night but Mellor is not in the squad.
