Onisiwo is Mainz's three-goal leading marksman so far this season, but hasn't scored in his last three. Injury to strike partner Jonathan Burkardt puts added onus on the Austrian to end his mini lean streak. With forward Marcus Ingvartsen still sidelined, Jae-sung Lee will likely be recalled in a supporting role. Bo Svensson is also without defender Alexander Hack, who was sent off in the 4-1 loss to Hoffenheim. Niklas Tauer should deputise, but midfielder Anton Stach is in danger of missing out for the second week in a row. With 10 points from six games, the 05ers could climb into the top three - overnight at least - if they can land a fourth win of the campaign.
Hertha followed up a first win of 2022/23 against Augsburg by drawing 2-2 with Bayer Leverkusen last time out. Having scored as a substitute in both games, forward Marco Richter could be rewarded with his first start since having a testicular tumour removed in July. Former Mainz midfielder Jean-Paul Boetius has only made one start following his summer move to the capital, while Boateng missed the Augsburg win altogether and was an unused substitute in Leverkusen. With the exception of Richter, Schwarz isn't expected to shuffle his pack as Hertha - with five points on the board - look to pull away from the clutch of sides in and around the relegation zone.
