Leandro Bonucci rips into Declan Rice for Euro claim and 'it's coming home' song

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has ripped into highly sought-after midfielder Declan Rice after some of his comments at Euro 2020.

Italy beat England on penalties in the final of the competition of the summer, with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missing from the spot after a 1-1 draw in normal time, with Luke Shaw and Bonucci scoring.

The usual heartache of penalty disappointment for the Three Lions was made considerably worse by the fact that the majority of their games were played at Wembley, thus giving them a home nation feel.

Several players stepped up to the occasion over the course of the tournament for manager Gareth Southgate, with Kalvin Phillips, Raheem Sterling and Shaw receiving plenty of praise.

West Ham midfielder Rice also was commended for his performances, but Italian centre-back Bonucci is reluctant to show the 22-year-old in a good light after infuriating the eventual trophy winners with some of his arrogance.

Speaking to The Athletic about the tournament, the Juve centre-back spoke of how he thought England got carried away with their chances of lifting the Euro 2020 trophy, mainly via the iconic 'It's Coming Home' song.

He said: "We didn't pay much attention to it until the Spain game, then the anger inside of us began to mount. We wanted to show them that the final hadn't already been decided. That they hadn't already won.

"Hearing that song on repeat and the comment from Declan Rice saying England were 10 times more motivated to win than us… well, they're the kind of mistakes young players make. You don't say that. You should never say you want something more than somebody else or you're better than somebody else."

England's performance at the Euros was a massive indicator of the progress that the squad are making under Southgate.

Many are quick to point fingers at the slightly more average run of fixtures before the tournament and about how talented the squad is, but in previous years there is a good chance that the Three Lions would have been knocked out considerably sooner than the final.

Declan Rice was devastated with the defeat in the final on penalties

After Kane's Manchester City saga post-Euros, Rice is now hitting all the headlines.

According to numerous reports, Manchester United and rivals City are set to go head to head to secure the Hammers' star midfielder.

Rice is thought to cost at least £100million this summer, but he is yet to sign an extension on his deal until 2024 and many feel this might indicate that he isn't entirely decided on where his future lies and may be waiting to see how his side fares in the Europa League this season.

David Moyes' side got their European campaign off to a flying start earlier this month with a 2-0 away win over Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb, with Michail Antonio and Rice scoring the crucial goals to kickstart what fans will be hoping is a tournament they can progress far in.

If West Ham pushes on in all competitions then there is a likelihood that Rice will buy into the vision, but one would assume that if a team like City comes in and offers him regular game time then he could be swayed.
