Kelleher set to join wall of legends - but who are 13 other Liverpool keepers

mirror.co.uk, 28 February 2022, 14:20
Caoimhin Kelleher played a heroic part in Liverpool's Carabao Cup final success over Chelsea at the weekend to earn a place on the Reds' famous goalkeeping wall

Caoimhín Odhrán Kelleher is a name that will now forever go down in Liverpool history. And it seems his face now will too.

Boss Jurgen Klopp revealed after the goalkeeper's Wembley heroics that the young stopper will now take his place on the "Red wall" at the club's training ground.

It is a mural commissioned by goalkeeping coach John Achterburg, which details the heroes in Anfield history who were the last line of defence…the keepers whose 'no pasaran' attitude brought glittering trophies to the club.

There are 13 goalkeepers in the club's history who won honours, but Kelleher is now the 14th, and Klopp made clear that he now needs to go on that wall…and into club legend.

But just who are the figures who stand behind the training goal in indoor pitch at the training ground? Here, Mirror Football details all 13 of the club legends who went before the Irish keeper to win cups and glory.

From left to right on the mural, they are:

Ray Clemence

Won an historic five titles and three European Cups, and is widely regarded as the greatest ever, after getting in at the start of the most glorious period in LFC history in the 70s and 80s. Most appearances for a Liverpool keeper.

Pepe Reina

Won the FA Cup and League Cup with Liverpool, and remembered affectionately for his affinity with the fans. Also won three Premier League Golden Glove Awards.

Cyril Sidlow

Won just one trophy with Liverpool…but the biggest one of all - the first League title after the war, when the Reds became Champions in the 1946-47 season. Would have won more, but career curtailed by war.

Bruce Grobbelaar

Won more trophies than any other keeper in Liverpool history with 19 medals, including six titles and a European Cup, and rightly regarded as one of the greats, with his flamboyant style, which reinvented keeping.

Bill Perkins

The keeper who started it all for Liverpool, won their first ever league title back in 1900-01, when he was regarded as one of the most physical at in the days when keepers were offered no protection.

Elisha Scott

A case to be made that he was the greatest ever for the Reds. The legend lives forever after 468 appearances, the third highest number in the club's history. 21 years saw him win back to back titles in 1921-22 and 22-23.

Alisson

Already rightly regarded as one of the greats, and just as well known for his celebrations on the bus around the city after winning the Champions League in 2019. Won four trophies already, but more to come.

David James

A greater talent that his Liverpool record suggests; only won one cup with the club, the League Cup in 1995, but had all the attributes to become one of the best, and showed that as England number one for a time.

Tommy Lawrence

Affectionately known as "The Flying Pig", in the days when nicknames were a little more raucous! A huge frame and presence (hence the nickname), and was the keeper for much of Shankly's glorious reign. Won 6 trophies including 2 titles and first ever Reds FA Cup win.

Adrian

Only won one trophy as a starter for the Reds, but like Kelleher he was the hero in a shootout against Chelsea, winning the UEFA Super Cup in 2019 when he saved Tammy Abraham's penalty in a tense finale.

Jerzy Dudek

Best known for his 'spaghetti legs' tribute to Grobbelaar in that incredible 2005 Istanbul Champions League final, but his double save from Shevchenko in extra time was one of the greatest of all time. Also won the League Cup in 2003.

Sander Westerveld

His five trophies came in one glorious season, back in 2000-01, when he was part of Gerard Houllier's famous treble winning team, and also lifted the Charity Shield on Super Cup. Was replaced by Dudek soon after.

Sam Hardy

Known as Silent Sam, possibly after a silent film actor of the time, he was often to be seen having a quiet cigarette, and remembered as one of the best in the club's early history. Won the league title in 1905-06.
