Kelleher details Klopp's chat after scoring winning Carabao Cup penalty

Caoimhin Kelleher scored Liverpool's 11th penalty in their shootout against Chelsea before Kepa Arrizabalga skied over to hand the Reds their ninth Carabao Cup title

Liverpool hero Caoimhin Kelleher has opened up on his conversation with Jurgen Klopp in the immediate aftermath of the Carabao Cup triumph over Chelsea.

The Reds won the trophy for the first time in a decade after a fiercely-competitive 120 minutes of action followed by an equally hard-fought penalty shootout at Wembley on Sunday.

Kelleher was unable to save any of the first 10 Chelsea spot kicks he faced but converted his own effort before Liverpool were crowned champions as opposite number Kepa Arrizabalaga skied over the bar.

Kelleher is the latest entrant in an esteemed list of goalkeepers to have won major honours in a Liverpool shirt, joining club legends such as Alisson, Jerzy Dudek, Bruce Grobbelaar and Ray Clemence.

Is Caoimhin Kelleher a future Liverpool No.1? Have your say in the comments!

The Reds honour their great shot-stoppers with a giant mural at their Kirkby training ground which was commissioned by their goalkeeping coach, John Achterberg, last year.

And Klopp informed Kelleher his face will be etched on the wall alongside past and present greats after he helped Liverpool to victory.

Recalling his chat with his manager, the Irishman told Sky Sports: "He [Klopp] just said 'well done for scoring the winning penalty, there's a wall with all the goalkeepers on who have won cups so now you can go on that.'"

Amusingly, Kelleher admitted he forgot his penalty was the one which clinched the cup, while he also believed a draw was a fair result after regular and extra-time.

"It's a mad one," he added. "I got close to a few when it came down to me I didn't even think I had scored the winning penalty.

"I'd forgotten I'd got the winning one. All the lads were class, I was just happy to score. It was more hit and hope. I got close to a few but all the penalties were very high quality thankfully we were able to win.

"I thought we had scored when we got the disallowed goal but they had a few disallowed so I think a draw was a fair result overall."

Joel Matip thought he had given Liverpool the lead in the second half before the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement by fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

At the other end, Chelsea saw three goals chalked off for the same reason, meaning nothing could celebrate the two teams after a thrilling 120 minutes.

Kelleher - who made a number of fine saves during the match - opted for power and height with his winning spot kick before Kepa stepped up and fired high over the bar.
