'I want to party' - Wiegman gives candid reaction to England reaching World Cup final

talksport.com, 16 August 2023, 14:12
Sarina Wiegman has admitted she wants to party after England reached the World Cup final by beating Australia.

The Lionesses have made history after reaching their first-ever World Cup final and have done so by knocking the co-hosts out.

Ella Toone got England off to a flyer with a piledriver of a shot before Chelsea superstar Sam Kerr executed her own jaw-dropping goal.

But in the closing 20 minutes, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo made it 3-1 at Stadium Australia, to reach the final where they will face Spain on Sunday.

And speaking to talkSPORT, coach Wiegman has admitted she just wants to celebrate - but cannot lose sight now.

She said: "I feel like at the moment, I really want to party but the job is not done yet!

"I am so happy with the big picture of how we have gone through this tournament and how we won this game.

"It was an incredible environment. 80-85,000 people behind Australia so, of course, it is going to be a tough game.

"They are a good team, they grew into the tournament, it is an away game for us but winning 3-1 is really incredible."

The final whistle on Wednesday sparked wild celebrations among the England camp, who have beaten Haiti, Denmark, China, Nigeria and Colombia along their way to the final.

Australia players were reduced to tears after crashing out of their own tournament but they were applauded by their own fans after reaching the semi-finals - their best-ever finish to a World Cup.

As for the Lionesses, they have the chance to go one further than their semi-final heartbreak in France four years ago.

On that occasion, the United States beat them on their way to lifting the trophy.

But Wiegman's women are on a roll having already won the Euros last year and the Finalissima over Brazil in April.

It continues the exceptional job she is doing as England boss, having lost just once in 37 games since taking over from Phil Neville.

Just one more win, though, and the Lionesses will be crowned World Cup champions.
