The Aston Martin driver claimed third over Sergio Perez, but it took everything in his armoury to hold off the Mexican by 0.053 seconds.
Two-time Formula 1 world champion Alonso lost the third and final spot on the podium with two laps to go against Perez in one of the fastest cars the sport has ever seen.
However, the 42-year-old legend showed why he's still so special, battling back and putting in a stoic defence to hold Perez off until the final corner.
Then, with a drag race to the finish, the Red Bull pulled out to complete a move, but not until they'd crossed the line, meaning Alonso took the final spot on the podium behind winner Max Verstappen and second-placed Lando Norris.
Speaking post-race, Alonso said: "For me it was like 30 laps I had the pressure from Checo.
"When he passed me with two laps to go, I though the podium was gone.
"This is a phenomenal result for the team, we've been struggling for a few races, two DNFs [did not finish] but this is for them. Happy with this result - and now to Vegas!"
Alonso then looked utterly delighted on the podium with it his first since May.
Aston started the campaign as the second-fastest team behind Red Bull, with Alonso finishing in the top three in six out of eight races.
