Cristiano Ronaldo celebration: Origins of iconic move copied around the world

talksport.com, 23 November 2023, 12:03
Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in the history of world football.

CR7, as he's affectionately and corporately known, is one of the most marketable sportspeople on the planet, and his celebration has become synonymous with him.

It's an iconic move that has been copied by other footballers and even other sports personalities.

What is Cristiano Ronaldo's celebration?

After finding the back of the net, the forward typically wheels away towards the corner flag before doing a 180-degree pirouette and landing with a firm stance on the turf.

As he hits the ground, Ronaldo outstretches his arms and bellows 'Siuuu', which is Spanish for 'yes', with fans often joining in to create a booming noise around the stadium.

What are the origins of Cristiano Ronaldo's celebration?

The 'Siu' celebration was created while Ronaldo was at Real Madrid.

Footage appears to show Keane call Ronaldo a 'w*****' and 'p****' during Man United game

Explaining the celebration in 2019, he said: "I started to say 'si', it's like 'yes' when I was in Real Madrid.

"When we would win, everyone would say 'siiiii', so I started to say it. I don't know why; it was natural.

Al-Ettifaq manager Steven Gerrard calls Cristiano Ronaldo the 'GOAT' just a year after claiming Lionel Messi was greatest

"I was in the USA, and we played against Chelsea [in 2013], and I don't know where this is coming from - the celebration.

"I just scored the goal, and it just came out. It was just natural, to be honest. Since then, I started to do it more often and I feel like the supporters and the fans see it, and they're like, 'Cristiano, siiiiiiuuuu'.

"I'm like 'wow! People are reminded of me because of it!' So it's good, and I'll continue doing it like that."

Ronaldo now plays in Saudi Arabia for Al-Nassr and the fans there have seen the 'siu' plenty of times and will no doubt see it a lot more until he decides to hang up his boots or move somewhere else.
