Chesterfield mock Scholes with toe-biting celebration after scoring vs Salford

mirror.co.uk, 5 December 2021, 18:51
Scholes is part-owner at Salford and after they conceded in their FA Cup second round tie against Chesterfield, Spireites' scorer Liam Mandeville quick to poke fun at the former Man United man

Non-league Chesterfield took the lead in stunning fashion in their FA Cup second round clash with Salford City.

Liam Mandeville's long range strike put the National League side well on their way in the first half of the game against their League Two oponents.

But despite the quality of the long-range effort, which crashed off the underside of the bar on its way in, it was his outrageous celebration that has raised eyebrows.

The 24-year-old took aim at Paul Scholes - one of the Manchester United legends who is co-owners at Salford along with the likes of Gary Neville and Nicky Butt.

Footage emerged in October of the United legend appearing the chew his daughter Alicia's toenails.

Will Salford be promoted this season? Let us know in the comments section

The 20-year-old had shared a video on her Instagram Stories, writing: "True love," and the clip duly went viral.

Scholes came in for plenty of abuse on social media and broke his silence on the incident shortly after the fallout.

A stranger had tagged the footballing star, writing: "Drop dead."

Re-posting the message, Scholes said: "This is one of the nicer comments I've had this weekend.... I've had better ones."

Now, Mandeville's tongue-in-cheek celebration has brought the bizarre incident back into the limelight. After his goal he rushed to the corner of the pitch before appearing to mock the Scholes incident with a teammate's foot.

Plenty of onlookers saw the funny side on social media.

One wrote on Twitter : "Take a bow son."

Another put: "That is quality. Fair play."

The game, being shown live on ITV4, saw commentator Clive Tyldesley repeatedly have to apologise to viewers after expletives from both sets of supporters kept getting picked up from the pitchside cameras.

It is not the first time that a live game on second round weekend has had production issues.

Saturday's tie between Buxton and Morecambe was played in torrential wind and rain, leading to the main camera being blurred throughout.

Earlier on Sunday, sixth tier side Kidderminster Harriers booked their spot in the third round.

They knocked out fellow non-league side FC Halifax Town. Amari Morgan-Smith and Ashley Hemmings both struck in the first half to dump out the West Yorkshire side.

League One pair Wigan Athletic, winners in 2013, and Plymouth Argyle also confirmed their spots in the next round.

Wigan overcame Colchester United 2-1 with Callum Lang's brace sandwiching a Freddie Sears strike.

As for Argyle, they overcame a gritty Rochdale by the same scoreline at the Crown Oil Arena. Jordon Garrick put Plymouth in front before Aaron Morley's speculative effort drew the scores level.

But Luke Jephcott's late goal ensured the visitors went through.

The draw for the third round of the world's oldest cup competition takes place on Monday, December 6 at 7pm.
