Chelsea's Kerr and Arsenal duo among Australia's WSL stars looking to stun England

talksport.com, 15 August 2023, 12:10
The Lionesses will face some of the Women's Super League best stars when they go up against Australia in the World Cup semi-final.

This Wednesday, either the co-hosts the Matildas or Sarina Wiegman's England will reach the final and play Spain.

And there's some serious talent standing in the 2022 European champion's way.

The Lionesses' comeback against Colombia saw them advance to the semi-finals for the third time in a row in the competition, whilst the Aussies knocked France out on penalties after the game ended 0-0 following extra time.

The Matildas - who are the only team to beat England under Wiegman - have never made it past the round of 16 at the World Cup, a run they first achieved in 2019.

But despite this, the tournament's co-hosts have been tipped to go far in the competition and are now two games from glory.

So, who are the familiar Aussie stars that have got their country to the semi-final for the first time in their history? talkSPORT.com has got you covered…

Sam Kerr (Chelsea)

We can't give you the low down on Australia without talking about Chelsea superstar Kerr.

Widely regarded as one of the best female strikers of all time, Kerr made her debut for her country at the age of just 15, and it's easy to see why she's been one of the stars fans have been itching to see.

After pretending to be a boy in football games for years growing up, Kerr is now rumoured to earn a six-figure salary to lead the line at Chelsea.

She remains America's NWSL's all-time top scorer with 77 goals and has scored 54 times in the WSL since signing for the Blues in 2020.

Despite not starting any games at the tournament, due to picking up a calf injury on the eve of the tournament, Kerr has still been able to impact Australia's chances of lifting the World Cup trophy.

She came on against Denmark and scored in the penalty shootout against France.

Now Kerr will go up against Blues teammate Millie Bright on Wednesday in what could be one of the battles of the tournament.

Mackenzie Arnold (West Ham)

Hammers goalkeeper Arnold took centre stage in the quarter-final penalty shootout against France, stepping up to take the fifth and final penalty, only to miss before helping her nation progress back between the sticks.

Signing for West Ham in 2020, the 29-year-old had spent a majority of her career playing in Australia.

Arnold originally played as a defender and despite struggling with hearing loss and wearing a hearing aid off the pitch, the Aussie star is showing exactly why the Matildas made her their no.1 this summer.

Caitlin Foord - Arsenal

Another WSL star leading Australia's front line this summer is Gunners star Foord.

The 29-year-old has played in a number of positions in her career, including as a right-back and the versatile forward has 108 international appearances under her belt since her debut at 16 in 2011.

Foord netted Australia's opening goal in the 2-0 win in the last-16 against Denmark and has started every game of the tournament so far.

She'll no doubt help form an exciting attack for the Gunners alongside new signing and England star Alessia Russo next season.

Stephanie Catley - Arsenal

Foord's Gunners and Matildas teammate Catley has also been key for her nation this summer.

Scoring the winning penalty in their opening 1-0 win against Ireland as well as netting from the spot in the 4-0 victory over Canada, she's started every game at left-back.

Donning the captain's armband in Kerr's absence, manager Tony Gustavsson has hailed her leadership skills both on and off the pitch.

And that's not all either.
