Bruno Fernandes pokes fun at Man Utd's Champions League draw with witty post

The Champions League draw descended into farce on Monday afternoon when it had to be redone following glaring errors - and Bruno Fernandes' tweet summed up the situation nicely

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has summed up the farcical scenes at the Champions League draw yesterday with a tongue-in-cheek tweet.

The ceremony was in the headlines for all the wrong reasons on Monday afternoon, with the draw at UEFA's headquarters undermined by mistakes.

The governing body were eventually forced to backtrack and re-do the draw after clear errors were spotted on the first attempt.

The embarrassing afternoon for UEFA had plenty to do with Manchester United, who were at the centre of the confusion.

United were initially drawn against Villarreal, which was against competition rules, given both were paired together in the group stage.

Villarreal were then drawn against Manchester City, but United's ball was not put back into the relevant pot, meaning they could not be drawn against Atletico Madrid, who were the next team picked out.

UEFA were forced to declare the first draw null and void, before carrying out the whole thing again.

The second draw saw United land Atletico Madrid in the last 16, while Chelsea got Lille again, Manchester City will face Sporting Lisbon and Liverpool play Inter Milan.

It was an afternoon of pure confusion for those watching - and it was no different for the players.

The mood was summed up by United midfielder Fernandes, who took the opportunity to poke fun at the competition's organisers.

"What time is the 3rd round of the draw?" he wrote on Twitter alongside a laughing emoji and some popcorn.

The remaining ties will see FC Salzburg take on Bayern Munich, Juventus face Villarreal whilst Benfica will take on Ajax, having initially been set to face Real Madrid.

Real Madrid are now set for the biggest tie of the last 16 against Paris Saint-Germain after the re-draw.

There is still plenty of time until the ties, with the knockout stages beginning in February 2022.

The first legs of the last 16 are scheduled for February 15 and 16, and 22 and 23, with the second legs taking place on March 8 and 9, and 15 and 16.

United currently have other things to focus on, with the club currently being rocked by an outbreak of coronavirus.

Tuesday night's Premier League fixture against Brentford has been postponed after several players and staff tested positive for Covid.

United have shut down their Carrington training base for 24 hours to try and limit the spread of the virus.
