Bristol Rovers' Barton and new Fleetwood boss Brown to reignite Old Firm feud

Former Celtic and Scotland captain Scott Brown has been appointed the new Fleetwood Town head coach, which means he will, once again, clash with Joey Barton - but this time it will be in the dugout.

Barton's Bristol Rovers will be playing in League One next season after a dramatic final day promotion, which will see him meet Brown and his former side Fleetwood.

The Cod Army are renowned for giving opportunities to young managers who are looking for their first job in football, just as they did with Barton and have now done with Brown.

And the pair will meet for the first time since they faced off during a classically fiery Old Firm derby, when Brown's Celtic beat Barton's Rangers 5-1 win in 2016.

The Englishman had some very bold things to say about the former Celtic captain before the hammering, however.

Barton told talkSPORT: "People keep talking about Joey Barton and Scott Brown. He ain't in my league. He is nowhere the level I am as a player. He can't get to me.

"If I play well, Scott Brown doesn't stand a chance. That is not me being blasé. That is me just stating what I believe."

After the comfortable victory, Brown hit back, stating: "Joey talked a great game and I showed him a great game.

"It was as simple as that, he did the talking off the park and I did it on the field."

Bristol Rovers vs Fleetwood will be a game that many will keep their eye on when the fixtures are released on June 23, with the pair's press conferences sure to get plenty of media attention.

But this time they can't settle any scores with big tackles or off-the-ball digs, so it'll have to be tactical masterstrokes that secure the bragging rights.

There won't be many volunteers to be the fourth official for that one!
