Beckham in awe, Kane loved Toone's goal and even The Queen got involved with praise

Sarina Wiegman's side captured the hearts of all fans with their journey through the European Championship, culminating in their 2-1 victory over Germany in the final.

Ella Toone's second half goal gave the Lionesses the lead, before Lina Magull leveled for Germany after 79 minutes.

While nerves were building around the country, England remained cool as substitute Chloe Kelly prodded home from close range during extra time before wheeling away in celebration.

Securing England's first major football trophy since 1966, Prince William was on hand to hand out the winners' medals to the players, before his grandmother, the Queen, shared her congratulations on social media.

She said: "My warmest congratulations, and those of my family, go to you all on winning the European Women's Football Championships. It is a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff.

"The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise. However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned.

"You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today."

As well as genuine royalty, the Lionesses attracted the congratulations of football's biggest names and England's biggest football clubs.

Harry Kane was there to see it and the men's captain and striker was impressed by Toone's classy finish.

David Beckham, meanwhile, praised the squad and posted a picture of captain Leah Williamson with the caption: "The journey has only just started," followed by the words 'Our captain & leader'.

"This was about more than just a game today," the former captain said.

Jack Grealish also posted his congratulations and, unsurprisingly, was keen to praise Man City star Kelly for her goal.

Other messages came from former England strikers Michael Owen and Alan Shearer, plus a host of Premier League clubs.
