5 potential Gareth Southgate replacements as England boss comes under fire

mirror.co.uk, 15 June 2022, 11:54
Brighton boss Graham Potter is the leading candidate to become the next England manager if Gareth Southgate is sacked from his post ahead of this year's World Cup in Qatar

Gareth Southgate has come under increased pressure from the England fans after the Three Lions slumped to their heaviest home defeat since 1928 with a 4-0 loss against Hungary.

A brace from Rolland Sallai and goals from Zsolt Nagy and Daniel Gazdag handed Hungary all three points as they moved to the top of Group A3. Meanwhile, the Three Lions sit bottom and are in danger of being relegated to the second tier of the Nations League.

England have failed to win any of their first four group matches during the international break, after suffering a 1-0 reverse in Hungary and drawing against both Germany and Italy. Southgate's side also have not scored in open play for more than 400 minutes with Raheem Sterling's 45th-minute strike at home to Ivory Coast back in March the last time they found the net that did not come from a set piece.

It is a run of results that has saw the pressure rise on Southgate with some England supporters hoping for the FA to make a change before the World Cup in November. There were chants of "you don't know what you're doing" during their defeat at Molineux, while others were booing loudly at the full-time whistle.

The Three Lions have just two more matches to play ahead of their tournament opener against Iran. They will face Italy and Germany to conclude their Nations League group in September.

According to the odds, Graham Potter is the favourite to take over if England decided to sack Southgate before they travel to Qatar. Eddie Howe comes in at second, while Mauricio Pochettino, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard also sit in the top five.

Favourites to become new England boss

Graham Potter

Brighton boss Potter is favourite to replace Southgate after he guided the Seagulls to their highest ever Premier League finish last season. A 3-1 win over West Ham United on the final day saw them end the campaign in ninth on 51 points.

Eddie Howe

After helping Newcastle United to safety with some excellent results towards the end of the season, Eddie Howe has been tipped to become the next England boss. The 43-year-old was backed for the role during his time at Bournemouth but decided to stay at the Cherries but is a contender for the Three Lions job.

Mauricio Pochettino

Third on the list is ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is expected to be fired by Paris Saint-Germain in the coming days after failing to win the Champions League last term. The French giants crashed out of the competition in the last-16 and only won one trophy - the Ligue 1 title.

Frank Lampard

Lampard steered Everton to safety after once staring down the barrel of Championship football next season with the Toffees picking up 10 points from their final five matches. The former England midfielder has also previously managed Derby County and Chelsea.

Steven Gerrard

Having led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title and Aston Villa to a mid-table finish, Gerrard has emerged as a candidate for the England vacancy following an incredible playing career. The 42-year-old has won 35% of his games in charge of the Villains since joining in November.
