5 EFL talking points including Cardiff's comeback and Rotherham's statement win

mirror.co.uk, 30 October 2021, 16:57

It's been another busy day across the Championship, League One and League Two.

There's been goals, red cards and drama aplenty across the three divisions as we reach the one-third mark of the campaign.

The drama started at lunchtime when Fulham posted a big statement by beating fellow promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at Craven Cottage. Aleksandar Mitrovic was the star of the show as the Serbian hit a hat-trick to take his goal tally for the season to a stunning 18.

The 3pm games delivered plenty too. Here, Mirror Sport looks at five of the talking points to emerge from the action.

Cardiff wake from their slumber

Mick McCarthy was long gone but it was the same old story for Cardiff City in the first half at Stoke.

They found themselves 2-0 down and after a club-record eight consecutive losses, they must have been feeling sorry for themselves.

It's not even as if it got remotely better after the interval. Stoke's Steven Fletcher notched his second of the day, to add to Jacob Brown's opener, to make it 3-0 and surely put the game to bed.

Somehow though, Cardiff found belief and three goals in the space of five extraordinary minutes had them back on level terms to stun the hosts.

Cardiff City mounted a superb comeback from 3-0 down at Stoke to seal a point

Rubin Colwill, Mark Harris and Kieffer Moore all notched to hand caretaker boss Steve Morison a point on his first game in the dugout.

It's one that he and those in attendance are unlikely to forget in a hurry.

Unlikely trio continue fine form

The top three in the division is perhaps what many would have predicted before a ball was even kicked.

Bournemouth (who play late on Saturday night), Fulham and West Brom were among many people's favourites to be promoted to the Premier League thanks to their financial might and strong squads.

But few could have predicted the three teams directly below them in the promotion shake-up, with a third of the campaign having now elapsed.

Coventry City are threatening to become the story of the season and we shouldn't really be surprised that they secured a victory over lowly Hull today. Mark Robins' side are now firmly tucked into the play-off mix.

Blackpool posted a fine win away at Sheffield United

In fifth place is another side who have punched above their weight this term - Huddersfield Town.

The Terriers flirted with relegation last season but Carlos Corberan's methods are finally starting to pay off. A slender win over a dogged Millwall side was the type of game they more often than not lost last season.

The team occupying sixth spot is Blackpool, perhaps the biggest surprise of the lot. Neil Critchley's side started the season slowly after their Wembley promotion but a headline-grabbing win over Sheffield United was their third on the spin.

After calls that the Championship was possibly going to be too predictable this season, the aforementioned trio are doing their best to blow that prediction out of the water.

Barnsley hit a new low

The writing looks to be on the wall for Barnsley boss Markus Schopp

Today marked 13 games without a win for hapless Barnsley.

The side that reached last season's Championship play-offs are a shadow of their former selves.

When they took the lead this afternoon, Bristol City fans must have been fearing the worse.

Nigel Pearson's side have a truly wretched record at Ashton Gate and hadn't tasted a league win there since January. And the last time supporters had witnessed a home win in the flesh was 12 months prior to that!

So when Andi Weimann struck twice before the break it was a huge shot in the arm for the hosts - and a kick in the gut for Barnsley.

They toiled in the second half but just could not restore parity and they are four points adrift. This was a seventh straight defeat and surely the writing is now on the wall for beleaguered manager Markus Schopp.

Rotherham send out a statement

To say Rotherham have been a yo-yo team over recent years would be an understatement.

The Millers have either been relegated or promoted in each of the last five campaigns. Whilst their credentials in the Championship will undoubtedly come into question, you cannot doubt their ability in the third tier.

Today's eye-raising 5-1 evisceration of Sunderland is a result that will make people stand up and take notice of Paul Warne's side - that is if they weren't already.

Rotherham were in fine form in a crushing win over Sunderland

They made it 11 games unbeaten in all competitions and are now fourth in the table - three points off leaders Plymouth.

Warne has a striker bang in form in Michael Smith. He notched another two today to take his tally to 12 and put him atop the scoring charts in the division.

And incase those who weren't watching might see the result as misleading given the Black Cats played more than half an hour with ten men, Warne had a simple message.

"I don't think 5-1 flattered us," he said.

Newport taking to new manager's methods

James Rowberry is making this management lark look easy.

The Newport manager saw his side sweep aside Stevenage 5-0 today. He was always going to have big boots to fill after the exit of the hugely popular Michael Flynn.

And despite it being early days, Rowberry could hardly have started better.

Today's big win followed on from a 3-1 success at Bristol Rovers last week.

Dom Telford was again the star of the show. He notched a hat-trick today to follow on from a brace last weekend.

County are now eighth and are once again looking upwards.
