Premier League 2024-25 fixtures confirmed: Champions Manchester City face Chelsea on opening weekend

sportsmole.co.uk, 18 June 2024, 08:01
Premier League champions will travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the standout fixture of the opening weekend in the 2024-25 season.

Pep Guardiola's men won an unprecedented fourth consecutive top-flight title in the 2023-24 campaign and will begin their quest to get their hands on a record-extending fifth successive crown against a Chelsea outfit now managed by former Citizens coach Enzo Maresca.

Marasca, who worked as an academy coach at Man City before assisting Guardiola with the first team, was appointed as Mauricio Pochettino's successor last month after guiding Leicester City to the Championship title last season in his first role as a senior manager.

Man City's blockbuster clash with Chelsea, who finished sixth last season, will take place on Sunday, August 18, one of two fixtures taking place on the opening Sunday along with a London derby between Brentford and Crystal Palace at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Manchester United to kick-start 2024-25 Premier League season

The 2024-25 Premier League campaign will begin on Friday, August 16, with Erik ten Hag's Manchester United welcoming Marco Silva's Fulham to Old Trafford for the curtain-raiser.

Man United suffered their lowest finish of the Premier League era last season, ending up in eighth place, but they managed to qualify for the Europa League after beating rivals Man City in the FA Cup final.

Ten Hag's future was the subject of intense speculation earlier this month, but the Red Devils are now understood to have decided to stick with the 54-year-old and could extend his contract before the start of the new season.

Elsewhere, Ipswich Town will begin their first season as a top-flight club for 22 years at home against Liverpool on Saturday, August 17, with this fixture representing Arne Slot's first game in charge of the Reds.

Slot was appointed Liverpool head coach last month following the departure of legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, who spent nine years at Anfield and steered his side to a third-placed finish in the Premier League last season.

Ipswich, meanwhile, were competing in League One just two season ago, but Kieran McKenna has successfully guided the club to back-to-back promotions, including a second-placed finish in the Championship last season.

What other standout fixtures have been announced?

The month of August will be concluded with a standout fixture between Man United and Liverpool at Old Trafford, while the first major derby of the season takes place on the weekend of September 14, when Tottenham Hotspur play host to North London rivals Arsenal, with the reverse fixture taking place in mid-January.

Last season's top two - Man City and Arsenal - will lock horns for the first time on the weekend of September 21 at the Etihad Stadium, and they will then do battle again at the Emirates Stadium in the first week of February.

Meanwhile, the first Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool takes place on December 7 in what will be the final match between the two city rivals at Goodison Park, before the Toffees move into their new stadium the following season. The reverse fixture at Anfield is scheduled for the first week of April.

On the final day of the season, Man City and Arsenal travel to Fulham and Southampton respectively, Liverpool host Crystal Palace as Man United welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford, while Spurs take on Brighton & Hove Albion in North London and Newcastle United face Everton on home soil.

Here, Sports Mole provides the full fixture schedule for the 2024-25 Premier League season.
