Two men have been arrested on suspicion of an attempted burglary in the same village as Raheem Sterling 's home, with police attempting to establish whether there is any link to the alleged break-in that occurred at the England star's address last week.
Sterling flew back from the World Cup in Qatar on Sunday to be with his family after they returned to their Surrey home to find several items stolen. No decision has been made yet over whether the England winger will rejoin Gareth Southgate's squad ahead of Saturday's quarter-final versus France.
Surrey Police confirmed on Monday that they were investigating reports of a burglary at Sterling's home. And now, in a new statement, the force have said that two men remain in custody having been arrested last night in connection with a separate attempted burglary with enquiries ongoing to establish whether the incidents are linked.
"Two men were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary last night (6 December) in the Oxshott area," Surrey Police said. "They are currently in custody.
"Following reports of suspicious activity around 6.40pm, a number of resources were deployed, including the dog unit and the police helicopter. Our colleagues from British Transport Police also provided assistance.
"Enquiries remain ongoing to establish whether there are any links between these arrests and the break-in reported to us over the weekend."
On Sunday night Gareth Southgate, the England manager, said that the immediate priority was for the 27-year-old to be with his family rather than focusing on football.
Speaking after goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka sealed England's progress to the last eight, Southgate said: "We will have to wait and see [if he'll be back to play against France], at the moment, clearly the priority is for him to be with his family and we're going to support that.
"We've got to give him time to try to resolve that or be there for his family. That's the most important thing at this time, so we're going to give him that space.
"It didn't impact team selection. I spent a lot of time with Raheem this morning, but you know you have days where events happen and you have to deal with them.
"We're going to allow him to have as much time as he needs. He's going home, yeah.
"I really don't know because at the moment it's a situation in which he needs time with his family. I don't want to put him under any pressure. Sometimes football isn't the most important thing and family should come first."
Sterling was the second player to leave the squad after Arsenal defender Ben White, who returned home on November 30 for personal reasons. Sterling started England's opening two games, scoring in the 6-2 win against Iran and appearing in the scoreless draw versus USA, before sitting out the 3-0 win over Wales.
