A major part of their international success has come down to one man - manager and former player Deschamps.

France have won the World Cup twice and Deschamps has been heavily involved in both triumphs spread 20 years apart.
He joined a rare group after lifting the trophy in 2018 as he became only the third person to win the tournament as a player and a manager, joining Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer.
Didier Deschamps' World Cup record

As a player, Deschamps surprisingly only took part in one World Cup during his 11-year international career.
That World Cup was in 1998 in France's home tournament as he captained Les Bleus to their iconic first world title win.
The former midfielder played every minute in every game apart from one after he was rested with qualification from the group already decided.
He didn't score a goal but as a midfielder with a defensive mindset, the clean sheets were more important and in all the games he played, France only conceded one goal.

Les Bleus would beat Paraguay, Italy and Croatia to reach the final in Paris where they faced Brazil.
Deschamps led his team to a 3-0 win and the now 54-year-old lifted the trophy for the first time in the country's history.
After retiring from football in 2001, he took his leadership skills into the world of management.

He would eventually be appointed as France boss in 2012.
His first World Cup as manager was in 2014 and he led Les Bleus to the quarter-finals where they were beaten 1-0 by eventual winners Germany.
Four years later, Deschamps' men dominated the competition and France won their second world title, beating Croatia 4-2 in the final.

With this achievement, Deschamps became the third person to win the competition as a manager and player.
He was also only the second captain to do so, with Beckenbauer the only other person to achieve that feat.
In Qatar, France are one of the favourites to win the tournament again, with Deschamps aiming to achieve what no other manager has ever done before and lift the trophy two times in a row.
