It was a successful week for Dortmund, who followed up a 3-1 win at Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga with a 2-0 victory over Ingolstadt in the DFB Cup on Tuesday, with Thorgan Hazard answering coach Rose's prayers in the continued absence of Haaland with both goals. The brace will have given the Belgian a good shout at starting against Cologne after being only a substitute on Tuesday, while Rose's options remain somewhat limited. In addition to Haaland, he is still without Raphael Guerreiro, Gio Reyna, Mateu Morey, while Mahmoud Dahoud remains a doubt. With a UEFA Champions League clash with Ajax to plan for next week, he will be wondering how best to manage his players. Youssoufa Moukoko could be back in contention, though, while Dan-Axel Zagadou is due to play for the reserves on Saturday as he steps up his recovery from injury.
Cologne roll into town with confidence levels high after recovering from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Rhine rivals Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, with Man of the Matchday Anthony Modeste bringing up half a century of goals for the Billy Goats. The Frenchman struck another brace in the 2-0 DFB Cup second round triumph away to VfB Stuttgart on Wednesday, meaning he will no doubt lead the attack again in Dortmund. Coach Steffen Baumgart is otherwise able to pick from largely a fully-fit squad, with only Ellyes Skhiri certain to miss out with a fractured fibula.
Match stats
Haaland has scored nine and assisted three of Dortmund's 25 Bundesliga goals this season. BVB have struck five times in the three games he's missed through injury.
Reus is Dortmund's next best for total goal involvements with two goals and three assists.
Dortmund have won their last eight Bundesliga home games in a row, dating back to 3 April.
Modeste is fourth in this season's Bundesliga scoring charts, behind only Patrik Schick (eight), Haaland (nine) and Robert Lewandowski (10). The Frenchman has registered a league-high four headers.
Jonas Hector is joint-third in the division's assists table with four. Five would mark a single-season career best for the former Germany international.
Cologne were one of three teams BVB failed to beat in the league last season. Their 2-1 win in Dortmund last November ended a run of 20 Bundesliga visits without victory dating back to April 1991.
