Wales v Ukraine: Bale set to start at Cardiff City Stadium with Qatar in reach

talksport.com, 4 June 2022, 15:03
Wales host Ukraine in the World Cup play-off final to decide which country will be playing in Qatar later this year.

The Blue and Yellow have already ended Scotland's dreams, and they will be looking to do the same to Wales on Sunday.

Ukraine ran out 3-1 winners at Hamden Park thanks to goals from Andriy Yarmolenko, Roman Yaremchuk and Artem Dovbyk.

However, Wales boast a genuinely world class player in Gareth Bale and he could make all the difference.

It was Bale's two goals back in March against Austria that ensured Wales made it this far, so he will be looking to take his country to their first World Cup since 1958.

However, Ukraine have only competed in one World Cup themselves, in 2006, and they are determined to make their country proud amid the Russian invasion.

In truth, they were simply too good for Scotland, so Wales will have to be better prepared than the Tartan Army appeared to be.

Wales v Ukraine: Team news

The hosts are expected to start Bale, Joe Rodon, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and Ben Davies after all were rested against Poland in midweek.

Kieffer Moore returns to the squad after missing the game against Austria in March.

Brennan Johnson and Sorba Thomas are also likely to feature after arriving late to the Dragons' training camp due to being involved in the Championship play-off final last weekend.

Meanwhile, the away side have no new injury concerns and could name the same XI that dispatched Scotland.

Oleksandr Zinchenko should earn his 50th cap for his country after a scintillating display from midfield on Wednesday.

Wales v Ukraine: What has been said?

Wales manager Robert Page: "I want my players to understand what a Welsh supporter wants to see when they are on that pitch.

"I'm talking about the values of a strong work ethic. Don't be complaining about having to play for 94 or 95 minutes.

"I want the Welsh supporters to walk away at the end of the game proud of not only the performance from a footballing point of view, but of the effort that they've put in from a work ethic point of view.

"You don't know how the game's going to go and there's a lot of pressure on it.

"But the supporters play a massive part in that, and that's why we were so glad to be playing at home.

"This is the biggest game in Welsh history since 1958. There's no hiding behind that and we're all excited by that."

Ukraine star Oleksandr Zinchenko: "Everyone knows the situation right now in Ukraine and every single game for us is like a final.

"We have a dream as a team to be at the World Cup and we have one more game — one more final — and we need to win it. Otherwise this game is not going to mean anything.

"Scotland are a great team with unbelievable players and we knew it would be tough. But we did well.

"We scored three goals and we could have scored even more, so let's go in this last game. It's going to be massive for us.

"Everyone understands the situation. It's a final and we need to show the best performance of our lives."
