Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris 'in advanced talks with Los Angeles FC'

sportsmole.co.uk, 29 December 2023, 00:41
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is reportedly in advanced talks with MLS club Los Angeles FC over a January move to the United States.

The 37-year-old, who will soon enter the final six months of his contract, has expressed his desire to seek pastures new after 11 years in North London.

Lloris has made a total of 447 appearances for Spurs across all competitions since joining from Nice back in 2012, keeping 151 clean sheets.

The 2018 World Cup winner with France was part of the Tottenham side that reached the 2019 Champions League final under former head coach Mauricio Pochettino, but the shot-stopper has failed to win silverware with the Lilywhites.

Lloris kept just seven clean sheets in 25 outings during the 2022-23 Premier League campaign, and he has since failed to make a single appearance for Spurs this term, last featuring for the club in a heavy 6-1 defeat at Newcastle United in April.

The veteran goalkeeper, who was stripped of the captaincy shortly after Ange Postecoglou's arrival at Tottenham, came close to leaving the club in the summer after holding talks with Serie A outfit Lazio.

However, a move to Italy failed to materialise for Lloris, who has since been linked with a number of different clubs including former side Nice, Chelsea and Newcastle.

A switch to America now appears to be on the cards for Lloris, as The Guardian reports that negotiations between the goalkeeper and LAFC over a free transfer to the MLS club are in the final stages.

The report adds that there is a feeling at Tottenham that Lloris's departure is close to being confirmed, with the January transfer window set to officially open on Monday.

The Frenchman is understood to have trained regularly with the Spurs first team this season, but after making his decision to leave clear in the summer, Postecoglou has since handed the gloves to Guglielmo Vicario, who has excelled between the sticks since joining the club from Empoli in the summer.

Lloris is not the only Spurs player who could be heading for the exit door in January, as a recent report claims that both Eric Dier and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have been told that they are free to leave the club.

Dier is seemingly deemed surplus to requirements having made just three Premier League appearances this season, while Hojbjerg has started only four of his 14 top-flight outings this term and is believed to be considered as a backup option in midfield when Postecoglou has a fully-fit squad at his disposal.
