The World Cup will be deprived of top talents like Haaland, Salah and Robertson

talksport.com, 6 June 2022, 10:43
Italy are among the big nations who won't be competing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and some household names will miss out on football's showpiece event.

The Azzurri fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to North Macedonia in their World Cup play-off semi-final clash and the Euro 2020 winners have now failed to make a second successive World Cup after previously not missing one since 1958.

England had no such problems sealing their place in Qatar following a 10-0 win over San Marino in a game where the Three Lions only needed a point.

And Gareth Southgate's men won't have to worry about facing some of the world's biggest superstars later this year…

Which players will miss out on a place at Qatar 2022?

Erling Haaland

The striker is considered one of the brightest young talents in football but will have to wait for the chance to showcase his skills on the world stage.

Norway, who have not qualified for a major international competition since Euro 2000, finished third in Group G behind the Netherlands and Turkey.

Stale Solbakken's side faced the Dutch knowing a win would at least guarantee them a play-off spot with a draw also enough if Turkey lose.

Yet Norway - who were without Borussia Dortmund star Haaland due to injury - fell to a 2-0 defeat and will now miss out on this year's tournament.

Jorginho

Euro 2020 champions Italy have failed to make a second successive World Cup.

After failing to make it out of their group, the Italians were beaten 1-0 by North Macedonia in their play-off semi-final.

It means a host of big names won't be in Qatar.

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Juventus great Giorgio Chiellini will all stay home.

Marco Verratti, Leonardo Bonucci, Nicolo Barella, Federico Chiesa, Lorenzo Insigne and Ciro Immobile will all miss out too.

Mo Salah

Salah will not be at the World Cup this year after Egypt lost to Senegal.

Senegal beat Egypt in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year and they did so again via a penalty shootout.

Salah was desperate to take his country to the World Cup but was Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane who had the last laugh.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Aubameyang's career has had new life breathed into it following his controversial Arsenal exit and subsequent move to Barcelona.

But he won't be able to take his good form to the World Cup as Gabon failed to make it.

The Panthers finished a distant second to Egypt in their AFC group with captain Aubameyang failing to inspire them.

They have never been to the World Cup.

Wilfried Zaha

Another big Africa country to fail to make the World Cup is Ivory Coast.

Ivory Coast made three straight World Cups between 2006 and 2014 but have now missed out on back-to-back tournaments.

The Elephants were beaten to top spot in their group by Cameroon and that means several households names won't be in Qatar.

Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha is among them alongside the likes of Nicolas Pepe, Franck Kessie, Sebastien Haller and Eric Bailly.

Andrew Robertson

Nathan Patterson's first international goal for Scotland set them on their way to a 2-0 win against Moldova and earned a play-off place in the process.

The Tartan Army then made the road to Qatar a little easier by securing a home semi-final against Ukraine with a historic 2-0 win over Denmark.

But Steve Clarke's side couldn't replicate recent performances in their play-off against Ukraine, and Robertson will miss the World Cup.

Scotland haven't featured in football's biggest competition since 1998 and Premier League stars Kieran Tierney, Billy Gilmour, Scott McTominay, John McGinn and Che Adams will also miss out.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

The veteran striker was caught hitting Cesar Azpilicueta with a reckless shoulder charge in Sweden's World Cup qualifier defeat to Spain.

Ibrahimovic was booked off camera following the clash, which meant he was suspended for Sweden's crucial World Cup play-off win over Czech Republic.

The Swedes faced Poland and Ibrahimovic came off the bench but couldn't stop a 2-0 defeat.

Ibra, who only returned to the international fold recently after a five-year absence, has not featured in the competition since Germany 2006 and probably won't do so again given his age.

Alexis Sanchez

Sanchez's Chile have missed out on the World Cup after really struggling in qualification.

Now at Inter Milan, Sanchez is a Chilean football icon and has been to two World Cups.

But he won't be at a third and possibly final one.

Radamel Falcao

Like Sanchez's Chile, Falcao and Colombia were poor in the CONMEBOL qualification.

Los Cafeteros have been at the last two tournaments but they won't make it to Qatar.

Falcao is on 99 caps for his country but he won't be adding to that tally at the World Cup.

Riyad Mahrez

Mahrez's Algeria are yet to reach the World Cup.

Algeria, the 2019 AFCON champions, lost to Cameroon in their CAF play-off clash.

So there will still be no World Cup for Algeria.
