Six wonderkids to look out for in FA Cup - including Ian Wright's grandson

mirror.co.uk, 1 March 2022, 11:59
The FA Cup fifth round takes place this week, giving Boreham Wood, Luton Town and Peterborough a chance to cause an upset and young guns a chance to impress on the big stage

The FA Cup fifth will take centre stage this week, with some exciting ties scheduled to take place over the coming days.

The stand-out tie comes on Thursday night, when the lowest-ranked side in the competition Boreham Wood take on Everton at Goodison Park.

But there could be a few upsets on the cards before then, with Peterborough hosting Manchester City on Tuesday and Luton Town welcoming Chelsea on Wednesday night.

With the games coming thick and fast, and with some sides' priorities lying elsewhere, the FA Cup offers opportunities for youngsters to impress.

So who are the wonderkids that could be lighting up the competition this week? Mirror Football takes a look at six of the candidates.

D'Margio Wright-Phillips

It was the third round of the FA Cup which gave the Stoke City forward Wright-Phillips his senior debut.

D'Margio, the son of former Manchester City winter Shaun Wright-Phillips and grandson of ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright, played in Stoke's 2-0 win over Leyton Orient in January and hasn't looked back since.

The 20-year-old has now played seven times for Michael O'Neill's side, scoring his first goal against Fulham on January 22, and is in line to play once again when Stoke host Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.

Wright-Phillips doesn't just have serious family pedigree; he also has sky-high confidence in his own ability, which he thinks is most similar to his dad.

"It's the low centre of gravity, the confidence to try and take on a player," he told The Times.

"With my grandad, I'd say I think I've got better finishing than him."

He added: "There is always going to be pressure in football no matter what sort of family you've got and, to be honest, I don't really feel the pressure."

The pacey youngster is certainly one to keep an eye on as Stoke look to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 10 years.

Kaide Gordon

Liverpool are swamped with games at the moment and after their Carabao Cup triumph Jurgen Klopp could rotate his squad to play Norwich at Anfield on Wednesday.

The Reds are targeting a quadruple, with the Champions League and Premier League still on the cards, and the 120 minutes of tiring play at Wembley could help Gordon's chances of featuring against the Canaries.

The 17-year-old winger has already shown what he can do, scoring in the third-round win over Shrewsbury in January, and deserves another shot.

Although they didn't feature against Chelsea on Sunday, Gordon and Tyler Morton travelled to Wembley with the first team and are highly thought of.

"They know and they feel that they are our talents and they are part of our squad," Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said on Friday.

"What's important is that they travel with us, at least the ones who are constantly with the first team, so Tyler, Kaide [and so on]."

HAVE YOUR SAY! Which youngster are you most looking forward to seeing play in the FA Cup this week? Comment below.

Romeo Lavia

Manchester City have the small matter of a derby against Manchester United to consider this weekend, so Pep Guardiola may well rotate his squad against Peterborough on Tuesday night.

Many fans would have liked to see young talents Liam Delap, James McAtee, Kayky and Sam Edozie play, but they all started for the club's Under-23 side on Monday, so are unlikely to do so a day later for the first team.

One player that wasn't involved in the Under-23s' 0-0 draw with Leicester is Lavia, a defensively-minded midfielder.

Lavia arrived at City from Anderlecht in 2020 after Guardiola spotted him playing at a youth tournament and appears to be being groomed as a potential successor to Fernandinho.

The 18-year-old Belgian has already featured twice this season and could make a third appearance against Peterborough.

Dane Scarlett

Scarlett is not a new name at Tottenham, having been in the first team squad for some time, but he is still only 17 years old.

The young striker has made six appearances this season for Spurs, but the vast majority of those came in the Europa Conference League, which the club have since been booted out of.

Scarlett came on for five minutes at the end of the 4-0 win over Leeds on Saturday and could feature again as Tottenham head to Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, despite Antonio Conte's clear stance on youngsters.

"I don't give a gift to my players, even if you're 17 years old," Conte said. "I think Dane is working hard, he is a really good prospect from the academy. At this moment for sure the best prospect from the academy.

"Dane has to continue to work very hard. We have to find the best solution in training because in the past he had many, many injuries.

"But he has great potential, he's only 17, he has to continue to improve, to grow, to understand and to think about football.

"It was a signal for him because he deserved this opportunity to play a few minutes. I don't give a gift to anybody. They have to deserve this opportunity."

Nathan Patterson

Patterson joined Everton from Rangers in the January transfer window in a move worth £16million, but is yet to feature for his new club.

That could be about to change, with the Toffees travelling to face Boreham Wood on Thursday night.

Frank Lampard's squad is looking stretched with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ben Godfrey, Tom Davies, Yerry Mina and Fabian Delph out injured and Donny van de Beek, Dele Alli and Anwar El Ghazi all cup-tied.

Patterson, 20, is surely due a run-out at right-back, while fellow new recruit Vitaliy Mykolenko could play on the opposite side of defence.

The Scotland international was seen as an exciting addition for Everton and fans will be excited to get a first glimpse of him on the pitch.

Michael Olise

Olise has without a doubt been one of the breakthrough players of the Premier League season.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has been a bright spark for Crystal Palace, chipping in with four goals and five assists in 22 appearances across all competitions so far.

Olise joined Palace from Reading for £8m last summer after winning the EFL Young Player of the Season award and has made the step up with ease.

Palace host Championship side Stoke on Tuesday night and Patrick Vieira will surely give his young star another opportunity to shine.
