Rooney hails 'unbelievable' Kane, who becomes England's all-time record goalscorer

England were awarded a penalty towards the end of the first half of their Euro 2024 qualifier for a handball by Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

Referee Srdjan Jovanovic initially didn't award anything but after checking the VAR screen, he pointed to the spot.

Kane then stepped up to take the penalty and smashed it past Gianluigi Donnarumma to put England 2-0 up.

Former Three Lions star Stuart Pearce said on commentary for talkSPORT: "He's been an absolutely wonderful servant to England.

"To break the goal scoring records of some of the great England players is quite incredible."

And the previous record holder, Rooney, offered up his congratulations shortly after, tweeting: "Congratulations to

@HKane on becoming @England's all-time leading goalscorer.

"I knew it wouldn't take long but that was quick [crying laughter emoji]. Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry."

Kane's previous penalty for his country came in the World Cup quarter-final against France, in which he skied it over the bar as England exited the tournament.

He clearly didn't let the miss get to him though as he dispatched a fine goal to put England in control of the clash.

Declan Rice put England ahead with a close-range finish earlier in the half, his third goal for his country.

Jack Grealish had a wonderful chance to make it 3-0 just before the break, but he squandered his effort from inside the box.

Mateo Retegui pulled one back for the home side at the beginning of the first half to set up a grandstand finish.

Luke Shaw was sent off late on, but England held on to claim a crucial three points in their qualifying group.
