talksport.com, 18 June 2022, 21:37
The summer transfer window is upon us and football fans can look forward to some spectacular dealings.

Erling Haaland has already completed a blockbuster move to Manchester City after they triggered a £51million release clause in his contract, while Liverpool have concluded a deal to sign Benfica's Darwin Nunez for a fee that could rise as high as £85million.

Given that we're only in June, there could be some massive new deals on the horizon.

With that in mind, here at talkSPORT.com we've taken a little walk down memory lane to look back on some of the most memorable deals from the 1990s.

With a focus on England, Spain and Italy, this list of deals will certainly get you feeling nostalgic.

Romario - PSV Eindhoven to Barcelona, 1993

The Brazilian star earned a big move to Europe with PSV Eindhoven after shining in the 1988 Olympic games, scoring a rather impressive 165 goals in 167 games in five seasons.

In 93, he became a part of Cruyff's 'Dream Team' at the Nou Camp, playing alongside the likes of Michael Laudrup, Ronald Koeman and strike partner Hristo Stoichkov, scoring 30 goals in 33 appearances to become the league's top goalscorer.

Despite spending just 18 months at the club, Romario won the world player of the year award before heading back to Brazil with Flamengo in 1995.

Alan Shearer - Blackburn Rovers to Newcastle, 1996

Shearer's time with Blackburn Rovers had already proven him to be one of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League.

After winning the title at Ewood Park in 1995, the attacker stuck around for a year as significant interest from Manchester United continued to surround him, however a return to his boyhood club was too much to turn down.

Signed for a world-record fee of £15million, Shearer achieved legendary status at St James' Park and became the all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League, a record that still stands to this day.

Zinedine Zidane - Bordeaux to Juventus, 1996

After impressing for Bordeaux and the France national team, Zidane had his pick of Europe's top clubs and completed a £3.2m move to Turin, a fee that some dubbed at the time as 'a waste of money'.

The French star spent five years with the Italian giants, winning two Serie A titles, an Intercontinental Cup, a UEFA Super Cup and finishing as runner up in the Champions League on two occasions.

With a ballon D'or to add to his collection, his move to Juve was subsequently seen as a bargain after moving on to Real Madrid for a fee worth around £66million.

Enrico Chiesa - Sampdoria to Parma, 1996

The forward had worked his way through the Italian football leagues before a memorable season with Sampdoria earned him a move to Parma.

Scoring 14 goals in his first season at the club, he helped them to second spot in Serie A, as well as winning the UEFA Cup in 1999 after forging a brilliant partnership with Hernan Crespo.

After leaving a lasting legacy in Serie A, Chiesa is now watching his son, Federico Chiesa, tear it up with Juventus.

Fabrizio Ravenelli - Juventus to Middlesbrough, 1996

The Italian striker was regarded as one of the top strikers in world football after helping Juventus to Champions League glory in 1996.

Few would have guessed that the start of the new season would see him playing for Middlesbrough.

Scoring a hat-trick on his Boro debut against Liverpool, Ravenelli managed 16 goals in the 1996-97 season before leaving for Marseille with Bryan Robson's side suffering relegation.

Ronaldo - Barcelona to Inter Milan, 1997

The Brazilian powerhouse became the most famous player in world football during the late 1990s.

After shining for PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona, Ronaldo completed a world-record move to Inter Milan for a fee worth around £26million.

During his time at the San Siro, the striker bagged 69 goals in 99 appearances, winning the ballon D'or and shining for Brazil in the 1998 World Cup.

Rivaldo - Deportivo La Caruna to Barcelona, 1997

After leaving Palmeiras, the Brazilian earned a big move to the Nou Camp after bagging 21 in 41 for Deportivo La Caruna.

Signing for a fee of £21million, Rivaldo became one of the best players in world football with 130 goals and 44 assists in 235 appearances as he helped the club to two La Liga titles.

Scoring some simply stunning goals during his time at the club, it was no surprise to see Rivaldo earning the ballon D'or for his displays in 1999 as he established himself as an all-time Barcelona legend.
